do you have to charge a 3000mAh batt. longer than 1500.

um like twice as long :p, just make sure they don't get too hot, if you can watch/set the voltage drop off, make it as small as possible.

The higher the capacity of a cell the longer it will take to charge depending on the charger and the number of amps you are charging at :D

The nice thing about the nmh bats is that you don't have to discharge them as much as a nicad. Since you would be starting out with more juice in the nmh bat, it may not take any longer than the nicad (assuming you dump your nicads before storing). At any rate it shouldn't take too much longer if charged at the same rate. Just my $.02 :)
You might want to check the "nmh discharge" thread in this electric forum to see how guys take care of their nmh packs. It may not be worth it to go through the hassle. You might be better off with a 2400 nicad's instead. They will probably last longer with minimal care, give nearly the same runtime, & more consitent performance. :)
