View Full Version : ARGGH, warped magnet on my MVP

Ahh, it was such a beautiful job soldering on my new Reedy MVP. The wire leads to the dean's plugs, the three capaciters and shotke diode. All done great, no cold solders, no excess solder anywhere, no soldered spring posts, etc.

I start to put the power supply on to begin the break-in process, apply a couple of comm drops to the brushes, and then try to spread those drops to the comm by manually turning the comm a couple of times.

But... What the ****! The comm will NOT turn. I can't even pull it out! It looks like one of the can magnets was a tad warped. Not quite sure how or why that happened, maybe in shipping etc.

Anwyay, I do have a question: This is a dyno'd motor, which means they have tuned it for maximum performance, etc. If I order a replacement can, what (if anything) will this do for performance?

This may be a rhetorical question, as I may get the entire motor replaced. But I wonder if I could just replace the can and get the same perfomance as the original.

A different can (still an MVP can, of course) will give you basically the same performance. The magic is mostly in the armature windings IMO.

Well, one thing is for sure - next time I buy one, I will open it at the store to make sure I can turn the thing. I really hate doing all that soldering for nothing...

Re:P2K - still a great motor, but I do a lot of racing on paved asphalt at a permanent track. I don't need the extra torque from a P2K, but I DO need the extra RPM from the MVP.

You can't turn it at all!? I know that the MVP bushings
are a little tight so you might want to try to turn it with pliers. The
first MVP I had blew up, and the same problem you guys are having happened to
the 2nd one. All I did was oiled the bushings and got the armature moving.
After that I put it into a dremel tool and used Trinity's bushing break in
drops. After that it worked fine.

Would you mind telling me how you used Trinity bushing break-in drops?

Are they used for just first-time break in? eg. open the can, put a few drops on the bushing and then break in the motor?

if you r looking 4 more rpm's you might want to try trinitys green machine 3. they give more rpm than p2k but with little less torque. has anyone run their mvp? when I ran mine it got too hot to touch, AE said that it was normal but i'm still conserned :)

you only use the Trinity Bushing drops for the bushings around the comm on both ends of the motor. you put 1 or 2 little drops of the bushing oil on both bushings and turn the comm to work them in. With the MVP that sounds impossible. lol.

oh and you should oil your bushings or bearings around your comm after spraying the motor with motor cleaner. you should clean your motor about every 3 or 4 times you run it.

Yes, I understand that.

The product he was using is called bushing busters, which is a black liquid (needs to be shaken to mix) used only for breaking in bushings, as opposed to the amber colored oil used to lubricate bushings.

Leet,
That EXACT thing happened to me! i cant turn it at all. it wont move an inch. i think that the nagnets are either warped or loose. but i also think that it is happening to alot of people. i read the readers write column of a RCCA mag. and someone had wrote how the same thing happened to them. I think i am going to write Reedy about this problem and send in my motor to get a new one. i didnt even drive mine before it screwed up. Recently i picked up a P2K Pro and have had no problems with it since. If i where u Leet I would do the same, pick up a P2K and send your engine into Reedy and write them what happened.

Oh yeah just put a few drops on the bushings (armature still in
can) and then using a dremel tool or drill chuck the armature shaft and spin it for a
minute or two. After that take it apart and blast it with motor spray.
That's it. (Don't over gear the MVP if you do it
will ruin it or the ID tag on the armature will catch on fire I still don't know
how that caught on fire!)
http://www.plauder-smilies.de/spin3.gif
