WOW! looks beautiful. And light!! Definitly something to look into. Are the rock guards clear lexan on the kit, or are they just clear for that pic?
Davey G
01-09-2007, 05:03 PM
That is a clear lexan undertray that protects the bottom of the chassis, wouldnt want to mess up that "PERTY" Carbon Fiber ;) , plus the lexan is more slippery then the carbon fiber so this helps the car accelerate after landing big jumps!

I like the fact that you can mount the motor on either side of the chassis. And I also like the adjustable chassis brace. In fact, this buggy looks very adjustable in gereral. Threaded shocks would have been nice to see though.

Chris Peterson

You betcha its light. I have the sb v2 with the carbon conversion kit and its awesome. I'd say at least half of the people that pick up my V2 mention how light it is.

The base model is about 200 street price. Its less than most 2wd buggies!

Sawweeet. I think I remember seeing it on here not too long ago (maybe a year or two ago?). It was a nice looking buggy. These academy buggys are pretty good looking IMO, and for the price...it looks like you get some serious stuff on this "pro" model.

Um, I thought academy made a 1/10th 4x4 truggy? I've seen them advertised on the back of magazines.
edit: nevermind...checked their products, all the 1/10th truggy are nitro. A shame...brushless power would make for a cleaner, faster and quiter land missle.

this thing is awesome...but why do they cost sooo much. Im in high school and comming up with that amount of money takes a long time for me. Ive always wanted a 4wd buggy. Ive been considering getting the sb carbon (the old "pro" version). does anyone know if thats a good buggy? its just that 4wd buggies cost so much!!
I agree an electric truggy would be reeeeaaaaallllllllllyyyy sweet. with brushless power they would really scream.

They do cost a lot, but hey, this is why jobs exist.:D
Although, the base version of this buggy (which should still be a formidable racer) is pretty decently priced compared to similarly setup/styled buggies from other manufacturers.
The DF-02 and DF-03 from tamiya are cheap alternatives too btw. The latter probably being better off racing right out of the box.

Dual brushless? What would be the point? It would make sense for a monster truck or something big, but this thing looks light as a feather. I don't think you would get any noticable added performance whatsoever by adding a 2nd motor.
This thing looks awesome. I'd love to get my hands on one some time!

They can be purchased for around $260.00. That is cheap for a 4WD. You want to see expensive? Search for the Durango, TTech Predator or the Yokomo MR4-BX. This Academy is a steal!!! :D
As far as the SB Carbon goes, it's good for the price...........

HPI used to have a 4wd electric belt driven truck called the RS4 MT, which evoled into the nitro mt. I had one and it was fun to drive, as long as you could gear it right. Call HPI maybe they will bring it back.

Most of the parts from the MRC/ACADEMY RT4GP Truck bolt on to the SBV2 to make it a truck, the only issue is the chassis is a little too short. Something to mess with though guys if your really interested in making an electric truggy for yourselves.
Now I have a question for you!! Would an electric 4wd offroad truck with a wing and low profile racing tires (like a 1/10th scale truck ProLine HOLESHOT) be considered a TRUGGY? Or would it have to have monster truck tires in order for it to be considered a truggy??
Let me know your thoughts on this....

Looks good and has a good price for a 4wd buggy...
Dave,
I would probably call it a truggy. Its like 1/8 scale trucks are using big monster truck tires anymore. They have been slimmed down.
If you had a an SB-T V2, I know that would be a cool item to have and maybe kick off a 1/10 scale truggy craze.
If the SB V2 Pro is anything like the V2 Sport, it should be quite durable

ChumsGum: 1/10th scale or 1/8th scale???
If the suspension from the RT4GP truck can be rigged up to the SB V2, and maybe some modifications to make it more truck specific, that would be one really hot kit. heck, do a losi and team up with mamba or someone else and release it as a brushless setup RTR. Pop in some lipos and 20+ minute runtimes here we come!
I would like to see an all new buggy from MRC / Academy and stadium truck too.

"NEWEST Addition to team, TQ's CT State Champs"
Howard Cadrain piloted his MRC/ACADEMY SBV2 Pro buggy to the TQ position over many factory sponsored AE/Losi Drivers this past weekend at Wolcott hobby in Wolcott CT. Howard drove his production V2 Pro buggy flawlessly to TQ by more then 3 seconds over 2nd place qualifier. Howard had some first turn troubles and ended up 3rd overall in the main. He also set the fastest laps of the day in the main event!!!

Here is the link SUPERSPEED: http://www.stormerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/searchpn.pl?dterm=&dterm3=&pn=&mterm=Academy&oterm=&uterm=&sthumb=on&smode=0
Got my build of sb V2 Pro going. The woven graphite is excellent. Very stiff compared to the previous V1 Pro and other woven graphite chassis based vehicles I have had.
Also, the suspension arms are some of the stiffest I have had. And they are very thick too. They feel very beefy.
Build is going great, parts fit excellent together. I went with AE diff greases instead of the kit grease, and the diffs felt sufficiently smooth. I also like how the diff rings lock into place, nice improvement. A few other companies who still just use a straight ring should look into this.
Bearings also were very smooth. I usually degrease my bearings and use my own lubes (tribo) but these didn't warrant it.
To comment again on the stiffeness of the chassis, with no top deck on, just the trannies and the woven graphite chassis, if you were used to flexing the SB V2 Sport and V1 series to get the drive shaft in on build, the chassis is sufficiently stiff on the pro car that this is almost not an option. Almost had to take off one of the trannies :) Now that is stiff and thats just the chassis! Guys who run on high bite are going to really love this, and the car is not all the way together yet!
Here are some quick build tips I found when building my SB V2 Pro:
Make sure that when assembling servo posts that you use the addendum, if you thread in both holes on the post first according to the manual and not the addendum you may have difficulty using the screw size stated when mounting to the chassis, after removing the bottom screws from the posts. If this happens, use a slightly shorter (2mm less) screw.
If more droop is desired all around, use the longer ball ends that come with the kit or slightly thread out the standard ball ends. Pay attention however to make sure that you have sufficient range for the cvd bone pin to remain the outdrive, especially on the left rear side of the car (looking at if from the front of the car).
Similar to what has been done with MIP CVDs, for extra security, you may use heat shrink tubing over the pin that holds the cvd assembly together. This helps get you through the race if the set screw loosens up.
