i used to race a XX4 so i'm fairly familiar with it, but left the hobby far before the XXX series came in -- im planning on getting back into racing sometime during the summer and want to race a 4wd buggy again; which is the more capable machine for dual-purpose? [bashing and racing] -- since i wont be racing as hard as i used to, i want something that is low-maintenance but still competitive. the XX4 [and street weapon] that i had, i remember being a pain becuase of the multi-belt drive system, and i've read that the XXX4 has got a single-belt drive, which seems much more to my liking :) however, if one is _that_ much better than the other, i can deal with the extra hassle.

or maybe someone can direct me to a better 4wd buggy? i've heard a lot about the x5, but i've read that it's just a XX4 conversion that requires a lot of work? do they sell kits for the X5?

As far as I know you can get a kit to convert a xx or xxx or a complete scratch kit to build an x 5.
Have you checked out the Kyosho Lazer ZX 5, shaft drive, good option parts, much easier maintenance and much stronger than a xx or xxx IMO.
I liked the xx more that the xxx but my xx was an old non graphite version so my only problems were with front lower bulkheads, it was sold to get a xxx g+, it got sold because I could not manage to make it through a pack bashing it without breakage. You could always just get a cheapy tamiya 4wd ($80-150) to bash and buy a higher end car to race to avoid abusing your race car.

since hte x5 takes the xx4 and makes it even better with a little xxx4 in it...is the x5 a single belt?

I've never owned either but I've heard very little good things about the XXX4 because it's breaks a lot and handles horribly on the ruff stuff so I would go with the XX4. If you were just racing I would say get the BJ4 WE but it wouldn't be a very good car to bash so I would go with the XX4.
