I am tired of loosing races due to bad batteries, please help.

Being on a small budget I was forced to buy used batteries from my friends. Last friday, I was in first place in the a-main, and had to scrap the race because my batteries dumped about two laps from glory.I've been told that I can weed out the bad batteries, and make a good pack.
Heres my question,how do I tell which batteries are good, and which are not?

1) Do NOT buy batteries used unless you know that they are good batteries (NTM you can get the numbers on them)

2) If you buy batteries new, make sure that you get a matched pack

3) Get 2400 NiCds, you can get good runtime out of those
