I just got back from my first real RC Car race in over 10 years. I raced alot back in the late 80's, so I am not really a rookie, but I sure felt like one in the first qualifier. I am actually driving my JRX2 converted into a truck I built back in the late 80's. It handles well and jumps as good as anyone else out there, but my CG is a bit higher than the new stuff, and I am 7 ounces over minimum.

I started well, and even held 2nd for a lap and a half. I was a bit slow down the straight due to very conservative gearing. I used my RC2400 pack and an Orion Core Stock motor. About half way through the run I started getting serious radio hit. After I mentioned it to the marshal, they made an anouncement to check radios in the pits and car started to drive okay again, but had no power. I made time but dumped just trying to get back around again. OUCH! I still managed 7th out of 8, NOT LAST!!!! and turned 9 laps, most had 10, a few 11's and one 12 (he was running Mod)

Upon inspection I could not believe what I found. The end bell screws came out of the motor. The pinion held the armature in, and the brushes and lead wires held the bell on. One of my 20 year old rear wheel bearings also fell apart. I got it all back together for the second qualifier. I went up one tooth on the pinion, based on the early laps, and the fact I had new IB4200's for the second qualifier and main. I also checked over the rest of the truck. All else seemed in order.

Second qualifier was far better. I started at the back of the grid, took off easy and walked by most of the field that was in a pile to be up in second again. The taller gearing was a good choice, and I should go even higher. I was now only losing about 5 feet to the top guys down the long straight and I still had plenty of grunt in the infield. The truck stayed together and my last two laps were my fastest yet. A 29.1 and a 29.1 Too bad a slower guy took me out and I sat for a 50 second lap so I just got 10 laps and finished 5th. That put me 6th on the grid for the main. Just to see how much juice I had left, I ran the pack down on my Turbocharger. I have an old one that only does 4 amp discharge though. It came out to over 2200 mah LEFT IN THE PACK!!! I used less than 1/2 of my capacity. I chose to leave the gearing for now since I knew how it drove and just wanted a clean race.

Starting back in 6th I took a very easy start. I still got around 3 cars to end up in third on the first lap. I turned 5 laps in the 29's and only had one incident that added to my lap time so I turned 11 laps, only lapped once by the leader and second place. I got 5th again, but actually felt like I was able to drive again, and I know there is plenty of juice to go faster.

I got a few pointers from the top drivers there. They were quite surprized when they saw I was running a 20 year old chassis. They told me to run it lower and stiffer for that track. AND GEAR UP!

I am not sure when I will get to run again, but I am sure looking forward to it.

I sure had a blast getting out there again. A real race is so much more exciting than just driving it around. I am hoping to get out about once a month, time permitting. 3 runs took over 4 hours and this was a light turn out. I see why manu guys ran 2 classes for more track time. I got around to discharging the pack I ran in the main, and sure enough, it had 2400 mah left in it. The bad thing is I only have two of those IB4200 packs. If I gear up much more, the RC2400 might not make time. I used about 2000 mah on track. When I charged the packs back up the IB4200's both took over 4400 mah in before they peaked out just warm to the touch. The RC2400 took 2460 mah at peak and was very warm to the touch. That does not leave alot of room to play with.

Hey I remember you, you had the purple truck. I was racing the blue and white truck in qualifying, then ran a blue and white buggy in the main. I also raced 1/8th scale buggy. There are usually quite in the stock class which makes for some fun racing. The core is a pretty high-torque motor, so you can gear up a little. I've been using a trinity CO27 which is very fast, with my buggy I am able to clear the doubles no problem. I have a few extra high capacity batteries with deans plugs, I can lend them to you for a race if you want. Come say hi next time we are both there.

I saw your name on the sheets, but I don't remember which one you were. I will look for you next time. Thanks for the offer on the batteries. I think I will be okay, I just need to buy one more 4200. I will then use the RC2400 for practice before the race. It pulls almost as good as the IB's, but only for 1 or 2 minutes before it loses some punch.

With the IB4200's, I was able to make pretty much all of the doubles if I had a clean run up to them. I was more concerned about running clean than fast, so I tried to give room when another car came up on me. I only had about 5 laps when I was not in traffic, and on those laps I did turn low 29's. The top guys had mostly 27's, so I do need more speed. I am sure it will still make time on the IB4200's with 2 more pinion teeth. As long as it still can get enough torque to get speed for the doubles, I should be in good shape then.

I am not sure when I will be at the track again, but I hope it is fairly soon.

A couple of my buddies live up there. One of them works at the Hobby People in Santa Clarita (if you're familiar with that store). I might make it out there some time to visit them, and hopefully we can make it out to Hot Rods. About a year ago I went there and raced, and that was the only time I raced even though I live only 5mins away from a nice indoor offroad/onroad track...

ARE YOU KIDDING ME  I would kill to have a on-road/off-road 5 minutes away, but INDOOR! I think I should walk over to California and give you a big ole SMACK! jk, but your lucky you have that kind of facility :D

I want to race any chance I get, but my wife, kids, and job all take alot of time. My son just turned 3 so I can't quite trust him alone at the track yet, and it makes it tough to drive my best while watching him over my shoulder. As soon as he is able to hold a transmitter and get around the track, he will be driving too. He really wants to now, but just can't quite do it. My daughter is 5 and has some interest, but a very short attention span. They also start the races late here, on track after 5 pm, so the race is not over until 9 PM. Too late for my kids, they crash around 7 PM.

I have stopped into Hobby People, out on Soledad Cyn. just past the Bowling alley, right? Nice shop. Good prices on full kits. Parts look about the same as Hot Rod which is closer for me.

Of course, HobbyTown has some of the best prices, but I like to support the hard core guys, even if it does cost a little more.

My brother lives just outsiode of Miniapolis, MN and he would kill for a good track near him. Him and a friend set up a course in a parking lot and race T-Maxxes. At least with two it is sorta a race.

My brother is Keith Meissner. I don't know his friends name. Keith has alot of different cars and trucks and he also flies RC planes. He works at the Science Museum. I have not been up to visit him since he moved there, so I am not sure which way his is from the city.
