well, the obvious paints, a compressor, and a brush. Good starter is the Paasche H series, single action.

yes, the Paasche H series. single action airbrush, 3 different tips,..very user friendly. Masks? there are many made, for patterns, ect. Liquid mask works great, you brush it on , apply about 3 coats,.. it allows precise cuts, lines, ect. many many painters use it...myself included.

yes, the badger 150, blue point, campbell hausfeld....
liquid mask is either sprayed or brushed on,..usually 3 coats is best, and each coat allowed to dry. when its totally dry, you can use a sharpie on the outside of your body, OVER the protective film, and draw out your design. Because the LM dries clear, you can easily see the lines for guides, and cut accordingly. You remove the portion of mask of where you want to apply paint, and ...paint. Darkest colors first, then light. i will post pics of this process later tongiht/tomorrow.

My first airbrush was an Paasche H series beginners kit. Within 3 hrs i had out grown that airbrush. I'm not saying i'm the most tallented painter or anything; I just believe that if you have any kind of artistic ability you might want to buy a decent airbrush. My second airbrush, and current, is the Iwata HP-CS. It is very durable and is a dual action. It can take many kinds of paints and is easy to clean and use. Immidiately i could tell the difference between the single versus the dual. My paint jobs went from looking like Freddy Kruggers face to decent recognizable race bodies.
About liquid masking: I used to use it, found it messy, took to long to dry, never completely dried, and i have better cleaner lines with 3M masking tape. You can still transfer the design easily, and you can tell if you missed any tape during your project.
