Yeah, I know that there is a 30 post thing on soldering irons, but I figured mine would get ignored in there, since it is among many.

While searching through my basement I found an ol soldering iron. Looks like from the 80s. Its a Weller 80w soldering iron. However they call it a Stained Glass Iron. My mother figure says she used it a few years back. My question is, will this work for soldering my motor? Also, it comes with a 3/8 and 1/4 inch tip, are those too big or is it good to have large tips? Last question, what is the best stuff to get for the soldering material, the silver stuff you heat up? Thanks, again I am sorry for making a new post just to ask these, but you saw my reasoning.

Its alright, I try to avoid those big posting things too, they seem to talk about something 3 pages ago <G>

Anyway, try it out, the tips should be fine, but try the soldering iron out, after that amount of time, it may be dead. I think its one of the "cheaper" models, but the number one thing you should do is...try it out!

That silver stuff is called solder. Get 60/40 solder, and buy liquid (acid) flux (or natural, w/o the acid). Flux helps the metals bond while soldering. Go to Radio Shack, or Menards or something (plumbers section) and get solder.

Don't use acid flux for soldering electronic components (including motors and batteries)!
The stuff is corrosive and will harm the conductivity of your joints. The tips might have already been used with acid flux so if I were you, I'd get a new one. Tips usually aren't very expensive.

Electronic solder such as 60/40 or silver solder (has about 2-5% of silver in it for better conductivity) is made with the flux in it. So you really shouldn't need to go out and buy extra flux.
