Hey all. Im looking to get into Helis. Im origanally an RC car guy. Have been for 7 years, and desided to set the cars aside for a while. I bought a cheap rc copter from the mall(it was a buy on get one free for 14.99 after X-mass sale), and it was nothing special in performace, but it really caught my interest. So im looking to get better, and hopefully start upgrading to something better and better.
Any Ideas from you heli guys would be nice. Thanks.

I can only assume you posted this before seeing this thread (http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=229443). If not, SHAME ON YOU! :D

in my personal opinion, I dont think you can find a heli to start out with better than the Blade CX. Wthi the new CX2 coming soon, with Spektrum radio, its great heli at a good price-point. I own a CX, and despite outdoor flight can be tricky, indoor its an absolute hoot!
I fly mine almost every day,....if only for 10 minutes, which is about fly time on the included lipo pack. Do some diggin', googling, and such, read up, and i am sure you will find that the Blade fits all your flying needs as a new flyer. I enjoy mine so much, its addicting!

Not much bud! Read my post there, the EHBG will answer anything you need to know about tail rotor helis and is a must-read-before-you-buy if you want a tail rotor heli. I also made some comments about coaxials, I too have a CX - but the Llama is comparable.

Do yourself a favor, stay away from anything that has a tail motor. Those little jewell's go out all the time, and then ya crash. Then the 4 in 1 unit gets damaged, and it escalates from there. If ya don't already have a Real Flight simulator, get one of those instead. 2nd choice, Blade CX or Blade CX2, or that Esky Lama he was talking about. I have been flying heli's for a year now, and the little electric heli's were a disaster for me. Then I got the simulator, then I got my 30 size nitro heli (used Kyosho Nexus), and I ain't even come close to crashing yet !!! In my opinion, the simulator should always be the first purchase, then a good quality heli, and beleive me, then you'll be able to easily fly any quality heli. This is from my experience, I ain't makin it up. lol I wish someone had told me the same thing $1000.00 ago... Dennis Flora

Dennis welcome aboard, but you might want to do some reading up before offering these claims.
The tail motors go out because the 11.1 volts is too hard on them. The dual tail motor mod is a perfect solution on two accounts - it splits the load between the motors, and if one goes out in flight, the other helps you get in safely. The tail weight IME is inconsequential and offset by slightly moving the battery forward.
Secondly there's no doubt the 4-in-1 will blow if you burn out a motor or crash and jam the blades - but there's a perfect solution for that too. Stock up on some 7 amp and 3 amp mini automotive fuses. Bend the posts 90 degrees and solder one pole of the 7 amp one directly to the neg on the main motor, the other to the wire. For the tail, put the 3 amp inline on either tail wire. This mod has saved my 4-in-1 at least 50 times during my crash testing - err flight training.
BTW 2003 is just when he joined. :D

I had a resister harness inline when I used the Lipo... but before the Lipo, I went thru about 2 motors a month !!! I bought 2 in a row that never worked... 120 miles of driving for nothing ! Nope, I can't say anything good about cheap chinese micro heli's, I had terrible luck with them. I found the BCP to be alot tougher than the VNR3D though...
I used to be in a thread on RCU, and there was at least 10 of us having the exact same trouble. Now, maybe the maker of the motors fixed the problem, but I wouldn't touch one... On these threads, we all have to share our experiences so that others can make a good choice. Alot of folks speak poorly of the Kyosho Nexus too, but I love mine... It has never given me any trouble... If were not honest out here, then there's absolutely no reason to say anything. If I ever but another electric heli, it won't be a $200 one, thats for sure !!! People who seriously want to get into flying heli's should always get a simulator first, period !!! If they just want a toy, I suggest something like a Blade CX. I could read all the posts in the world, but it wouldn't change what I went thru. I put my heart and soul into my 2 little micro's, and all they did was bite me constantly. I still can't fly a Blade CP, but I can fly a serious helicopter just fine... I have flown 5 or 6 different Blade CP's, and they were all very difficult to control. My Nexus is as easy to fly as my planes... I have flown a Trex also, and it was very easy to fly as well, but I perfer using the sim for inside practice, and a nitro 30 size for outside. I'd think larger, but I like the fuel economy of a 30 size. I also have no interest in learning 3D, at 53 years old, I just enjoy making it look real, and I really enjoy knowing that im coming home with everything is one piece. I havn't crash anything in over a year, and I fly almost every day. Dennis Flora

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum...But not to helicopters.
I agree completely with Dennis. The tail motors go out at all the wrong times on the micro's. I have a Blade CP and had the same problems with tail motors, I did finally changed it over to a belt drive tail, metal head and swash plate, BL motor, Lipo's and a lot of other parts. It flies pretty good now...But it still just a Micro with about $600 invested in it. My first Helicopter was a Corona (about $500) it's 5 years old and still flies like it was new. Bigger helicopters are much more stable and easier to learn on.
The CX is a great get you in the air and flying helicotper if you have never flown before. After that I would save my money and skip the micro's and get something at least the size of a T-rex...But 30 size and up are better. Nitro or Electric is a user choice.
Happy Flyin,
Lacey

Now thats what I should have started off with, but I met you way too late in life. I had $500 in my BCP also, but there was nothing left of mine. lol Over half of that cash layout was just crash parts. Oh, and the $50 Lipo... I bet that thing could fly for 30 minutes with that battery !!! I just couldnt keep a TM on it long enough to find out. Even with the resistor/diode setup and heatsink it fried the heck out of TM's.

Lacey, did you ever try the dual tail motor setup on your BCP One of the guys said that it worked good. All I know, is that every motor that that quit on me, had no brushes left, just the springplates. lol

Worked better but not as good as the belt drive.

Boy, all that cash, and ya still got a BCP. lol At least yours in in one piece, and has all the options. You got a BCPHR, thats "Blade CP Hot Rod" Does the BCP Pro have a brushless motor and a belt drive TR ? How much was the belt drive setup when ya did yours ? Im chargin the new batt for the Cessna now, and im going to try to test fly it in a bit. Hope it don't get dark on me...

BCP Pro does not come with brushless or a belt drive..Those are add ons.
Think the belt drive cost about $200 for everything. Like I said I have about $600-$700 tied up in that thing...
What was I thinking??.. :roll2:
Just a Dumb Blonde moment...Ha!

Yeah, when ya said $500 before, I think ya said that... I had a feeling you were mistaken... either that, or the belt drive was only a couple of bucks. lol Ya probably got close to $200.00 in the rotor head and swashplate... You coulda had another Corona or Trex for what ya got in your BCP. Between you and your dad, you guys have as many heli's as I do pairs of socks !!! Has he let ya fly the turbine heli yet ?
