I bought 2 Traxxas Stampede trucks with the esc and have a question. After about a week the motor in one burnt out with the other a few days behind it.I ordered 2 Trinity Speed Gems 2 17t single winds for them. There was much more proformance but after running a few packs the battery and speed control connector melted together on both trucks. Also the motors and batts are hot after a run.Do you have to wait between runs for a cool down or do I have some gearing problem?Gears are all stock and Trinity racing packs charged by intellipeak delux chargers. The esc says it can use a 17t motor. Also is there any way to heatsink the motor to cool it better?Does anyone make a small heatsink for the stampede? Thanks for any help you can give.
Im pretty sure Traxxas advertise's that ESC for a 19T motor max. And many manufactuers make heat sinks, if you can, go to your LHS and see if certain heatsinks will work. Im sure you'll find one that fits. Also look into some Deans connectors. You have to solder them on, but theyre a LOT better than those bullet connectors. As for gears, DEFINATELY change them to a lower pinion (less heat). Probably 2-3 teeth below whats normal on the stampede.

JP got it right.
By the way, always let the battery packs cool down before recharging them. Let the motor cool too. Heat is the enemy remember that. Anything you can do to cool the esc, batt, motor is good. Chech out a certain site (RCCA did a good story in the latest issue for the stampeed)for some stampeed goodies. Sorry, don't want to spam.
Good luck!

Yes, you should change your gearing. To a lower gearing you are geared to high right now. You should also try getting a 27 turn motor and try to gear it right. The connectors melted probably because you have tamiya's & you overgeared.
JP got it right.
BuggieRacer.. Remember me? I think you forgot something...

I don't understand how dean connectors will stop that kind of heating??!

Roadrage, What JP said was is to lower the pinion tooth count by two or three teeth to help the overheating problem. The recomendation for the connectors is to fix the melting connector problem. They should not melt down under any conditions, and more than likely he still had the Tamiya connectors which are totally inadequate.
I have to wonder though where he's running his truck. If he's running it in grass it'll
smoke the electrics also. Just my $.02

With standard tamiya style connecters, the pins used in them are made from cheap "pot" metal ("pot" meaning lots of different types of metal melted down in to one).
This kinda of metal creates A LOT of resistance, and resistance creates heat. The more current your motor draws (overgearing your motor will draw more current because its working too hard), the more heat you create. Tayima plugs are made out of cheap plastic, and when plastic gets too hot, it melts (duh).
Deans plugs use gold plated connectors. Gold being the BEST conductor on the planet creates the LEAST amount of resistance, so there isnt much heat (if any) built up in the battery to speedo / speedo to motor connections. (I feel you should always hard wire the speedo to motor connection, that way there is no connector to worry about) Good connections let the motor draw more current (battery juice) with ease, and it won't work as hard.
I hope that clears things up a bit.
