Has anyone ever had a chance to be competitive with TL-01 chassis?

Only with my friends. I wonder the same thing. It's definitely a strong chassis.

As far as hop-ups can it be modified well enough to compete?

TL01 & TL01B's can be hopped to the max. Their just slightly weighty due to the plastic construction of the frame. If Tamiya or someone else made a graphite or aluminum frame it would be awesome.

I run in races every weekend with TL01's but all in one class, most of the car has to be stock only bearings are allowed to keep it competitive. check it out at RCOutfitters

Check out my Project TL01 thread. There are tons of hop-ups for the TL01. MIP CVD's originally for the TA02 should fit the TL, Lunsford makes 15mm and 20mm titanium camber rods that can be substituted in for the Tamiya units. Megatech and GPM make aluminum arms, uprights, and steering knuckles, along with a host of other parts. Then there's the line of Tamiya parts available.

I got my TOL1 fairly competitive with bearings, lightened shafts, carbonfiber prop shaft, and oil shocks. The speed seemed to be a bit much for the "tall" chassis as it has a high center of gravity and would roll at most turns. If you adjust ride height right properly though this problem diminishes and disappears all together though
