Do you think it's a good Idea to strap a rocket on a rc?

I'f you like char-broiled R/C cars, yes. :D

I'm seen a few vids of rocket R/Cs. The FLY!!! But make sure you have a lot of room to fire the thing off. And don't burn anything up trying.. hehe

make sure it wont light the body or something else on fire and also dont do it in dead grass
wow i feel smart :)

When I was in 8th grade we made a drag car that was drivin by a nitrous cartridge (like the ones air guns use). They weren't RC but they ran on string from one end of a hallway to the other. The cool thing about it was that the hole was big enough to put a rocket engine in. We tried only once in a dirt field and man did it fly. Then it got caught on a weed and set it on fire (we put it out). From experience - it WILL go faster than you think, and it WILL set something on fire if it comes close. Also the parachute ejection charge in most model rocket engines will melt/burn stuff.

You guys used NITROUS cartridges?!?! That would be kinda dangerous in a school envrionment, we used Co2 cartridges...I could see it now, the puncture pin from the hammer would spark on the metal of the cartridge and effectively make your dragster a "rocket car"..hehe..nah I'm just kiddin :p .

Some kid on the HPI board tried this and set his neighbors porch on fire when it left the street!

LOL ya i think he ment CO2 cartriges my sister did that too. I once sent a lego man into a high tree with my rocket does that count lol. Cya

I made a rocket car out of an small old Tyco truck I had lying around. I put a C6-5 I think it was in it and went about one foot the went about six feet in the air then came back down with a crunch. I guess it was too light :) The car was barely bigger than the engine. Anyway, if you make one use a crappy old car, not something that you want to keep. Thats my advice.

When I was leaving high school for college I figured I'd probably be leaving R/C behind as well (what was I thinking?) so I came up with a fun idea for my old cars.

At the time I had a Tamiya Thunder Shot, a shaft driven 4wd off roader with the old style open Tamiya mechanical speed control. I basically attached tubes to hold estes model rocket motors on the back and added as much flame-resistant wadding as I could all over the rear of the car. I then wired some igniters into the electical system-- I connected one lead directly into the batteries and the second lead I soldered on an alligator clip. On the Tamiya mechanical speed control I put some electical tape over the contact used for reverse, and then clipped the alligator clip on so that the speed control's wiper would contact it when reverse was engaged.

A simple way to add a remote ignition system to an old R/C car. That way you could get some speed up with the electric motor before you activate the rockets, and if something fails you still have some electrical power to get out of a bad situation. There are lots of other little mods you could make to get this working better, but I thought I'd share my rocket-R/C experience.

Bj & Homie,

It was CO2, it's been years since then. The ol pumpkin is loosin some seeds or something.

not the best of all ideas

Think OPEN SPACE and have a bucket of water handy ;)

Make sure you divert the parachute ejection charge or you'll have Kentucky Fried Receiver :D

no, dont use a C6-5, use BOOSTER rockets that have NO EJECTION CHARGE,,, C6-0... also set your brake to a ton, and hold throttle open when rocket goes off and let it go back to brake when it is done

the boosters do spark tho. so have some like metal behind that just in case

my friend and i strapped 5 bottlerockets to a 1/43rd scale car and made a long fuse. we lit it at the top of the street and ran. well the car started to go prety damn fast and then it exploded as the bottle rockets blew up... it was sweet! the car was bookin' down the street and then BOOOMM!!! oh it was so cool i almost wanna do it again.

HOLY SMOKED!!!! hahaha. That video of the rocket Emaxx (Tmaxx)that old phart provided the link to was one of the funniest movies I've seen in a while. I feel sorry for the guy, but man, that was some GREAT footage! At least he got the video out of it. He should consider submitting it to America's Funniest Home Videos. Yup, when it comes to rocket powered cars, you never know whats going to happen. I fortunately didn't read the outcome before I saw the video. Thats all I'll say for now so as not to spoil those who still haven't seen it.

it better if the car has no spur gear, then it does not have the friction of the motor, i did it once with a nikko, 2 C6 on both sides lol that was fun :) i think thats the fastest that a nikko flew without a motor lol

I think I can safely say I built one of the first true R/C rocket cars out there. I built this car a few years ago after stumbling across Grants rocket car on the web. I was watching his rocket car video one day and wondered how I could build something wilder. I was originally going to use one "E" or "F" engine but they wern't available in my area, so I settled on two D sized engines instead. If I wanted to I could run this car with twin 2 stage but that would be insanely balistic. Take note that the chassis is only 12" long. http://www.geocities.com/cheeta_rc/rocket.html

Nice setup lil general. I thought that launching servo rig you made was pretty trick. Even used mini servo. And that aluminum rocket mount is a nice piece of work too. Much more professionally done than mine :).

I think you should take a tank (Of Stargon, or Co2) like I use on my welder (Not Co2, Argon Blend(Brandname "Stargon")), strap it to the top of your car, take a sledge hammer and knock the top of it off. The pressure should be enough to launch your car well over 150 Mph  , I've heard stories about these things ripping holes in the sides of houses. And they are filled with inert gas so they won't explode! Nah..I'm just kiddin' :p . Man...I'm having trouble being serious on this topic  . (Gullible People Warning :DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME, YOU WILL DO SERIOUS DAMAGE, HECK, DON'T TRY THIS AT ALL,I AM NOT BEING SERIOUS)

I put six "D" boosters on my rc10gt once. That was once too many. It was a lot of fun, it went really, really, fast but was a bit hard to control even after I rigged a wing up front for additional down force.
If I were you, I'd try it just for kicks.
