now i know its posed to be so great to have one but i am just getting into the hobby and no one can even seem to explain how a lathe works or what exactly its for i know it cuts a com but whats a com how does this process make such a great deal whats the hipe and when should you cut ? ** : >

the commutator is what the brushes rub against. After a while the comm will not be a perfect circular shape causing more friction which will slow the motor down. The lathe cuts the comm and makes it a circular shape again increasing the rpm's of the motor. This is called truing the comm.
