I have an amp max II battery in shotgun tubing and would like to make them into side by side. Is this possible and can some1 explain the steps in doing this? Will this damage the battery?

Thanks! :)

Nope. I have done this a few times.
If you have little or no soldering experience, get help. Soldering batteries is a little tricky for someone with beginner soldering skills !
Anyway ...

1) Remove the endcaps (cut the wires if needed, as close the the cells as you can)
2) Remove the tubing (sometimes there are two layers)
3) Literally break the clees apart. The are spot welded to folded metal strips. Just carefuly take the cells apoart and remove as much of the strips as you can
4) Grind, file, or sand any remaining metal strip stuff (there always seems to be some left behind right where they are spot welded). Don't go overboard though !
5) Build a normal side-by-side pack using the loose cells.

You will need some battery bars, solder and soldering iron (DUH!), maybe a bit of wire (14-12 gauge made for RC ... don't use your dads phone wire http://www.theshreves.com/pics/smiley/uhoh3.gif ). Make sure the iron is at least 40 watts (60 is recommended by me, and 80 won't hurt !).

I think this will get you started anyway :)

Pick up a deans speed jig. Makes it 10000 times easier
