first trip to nitro all i gotta say is take care of it BREAK IN URE MOTOR FIRST...i know its hard when u got all that power behind it but most newbies in nitro complain about there truck being broke cuzs t wont start blah blah blah read up on it and brake in your motor properly dont get on it until its broken in.... beleive me will run 10 times better and last 10 times longer im sure all the guys here beleive me on that one

i was so looking into getting this truck then decided to stick with the Buggy scene, but yeah, this would have also been my best pick if i intended to Monster Truck my way around any track or backyard. Its awesomely big and for that price it comes with amazing equipment... have fun riding with this beast.

Just broke it in today :D This was by far the coolest experience this year. Truck ain't new anymore :D It shifts surprisingly early (like 2 - 3 seconds after WOT) and it runs great. Pretty good as far as tuning, and it offroads pretty darn nice :D
Gonna run it again a bit later today, I've got to recharge the RX batteries (they already died practically after 2 runs.... RX pack is a necessity, IMO)
More updates to follow. My friend took some action pics with this Digital SLR camera, and he'll send those to me a bit later. I'll post em :D

Yep. I did break it in, combining a bit of combining both methods recommended in the manual. I let it idle the first tank or so, then I went around in simple shapes at no more than 1/3 or so throttle. Then as the tank started to run out, I progressed to 1/2 throttle. 3rd run, I went around the park, and the truck did not see WOT until the end-ish of that tank. I probably could have broke it in better and took it slower... but It runs great now anyways
Last night it didn't want to start, so I started fiddling with the tuning. I increased the idle speed about a 1/4 turn and leaned it out about a 6th of a turn on the HS needle. I charged up the glo-igniter, and started it up today.
Put in the igniter, and wham! starts up on the first pull :D Ahh, what a smile on my face that put :D Now it smokes a lot, especially at takeoff. It stutters at higher speeds, so that was a tell-tale sign it's too rich. Leaned it out, and now it's running beautifully. Too bad the grass/dirt is wet (rained today, but the road is dry)
I'm gonna set it so the truck shifts a bit later (it shifts insanely quickly) and I'm gonna tighten the slipper just a touch for some more torque in the low-end.
So I'm almost through a fuel bottle (500cc) now. Running pretty good, and I'm happy. $530 well spent ;)

Err.. I'm now encountering a strange problem - and I think it's to do with my TX / RX w/ the 4 x AA recevier setup - near me it runs perfectly smooth, and then as it gets farther the engine starts to stutter and doesn't go smoothly. It's as if the throttle servo just lets go and then regains power again.
I'm thinking it has a lot to do with the 4-cell AA receiver pack setup, but I'm not sure.
Any ideas?
Thanks

If its an am radio system you maybe getting interferance from a cell phone or a car radio system.

It's a JR XR2i, the included radio system with the aftershock - an AM 75 mhz system; I noticed before that sometimes there is interference in certain spots, sometimes not so bad, don't know. At the park though, little if not zero interference.
I suppose that could very well be the problem, but I think an RX pack is definitely needed. Sometimes during those glitchy times I lose steering completely for a second as well... (3 x 60+ oz-in metal gear servos, and an RX powered on 4 rechargeable AA batteries - seems a little underpowered to me...)
Hmmm...

yes get a 5 cell flat pack...u will get better steering and mroe reasponsive throttle....and longer run times lol

I was thinking the exact same thing. Plus much easier access than having to remove the tank to change the batts.
Seems it will be nice out tomorrow :D time for some more running over of plants and helping flatten the ground at the local construction site! ;)
Nice truck! They only look new once. :D

Hmm.. more radio problems. The servos, at times are completely unresponsive and the throttle servo doesn't seem to hold the carb open as I give it throttle - and the engine doesnt run smoothly and accelerate smoothly because of that.
Just as I was driving it last I drove over a curb, but it was more sudden of a bump than I had expected, and the truck flipped. Next thing I know I'm running towards it, because the engine's at WOT and nothing on the radio does anything. I burnt my hand (well, my hand through my sweater sleeve) killing the engine (via plugging the exhaust) Was at WOT for probably about 3 seconds
I started it up again, and the engine runs fine, but again the radio is behaving strangely. During the flip, the engine head got scratched up a good bit, and 2 body posts got grinded to nothing.
So I'm gonna get a new set of body posts, an RX pack with the highest capacity I can find, and likely a new set of RX/TX crystals, if my hunch is correct. I have a set in my 2PL that work flawlessly, that I will try in the JR system. If not, then it's obviously something in the radio or the receiver. For now, since my micro is out of comission, I'll just replace the system entirely and use the 2PL until I decide what to do from here.

Dave, i lay money on the rx, you are describing the same problems i had with my e maxx, bad rx. Get a return spring on that truck!!!!!!!!!
Man, i cant stress that enough, failsafe or not, a return spring is the ULTIMATE back up for getting that throttle closed!

Yeah, I do to :( Maybe a bad set of crystals or something, but I don't know. I'll do some testing after I get home from school today.
I will look into getting a TRS when I go to my LHS on saturday. I hope I can solve this problem... with as little money spent as possible.... :o

yeah, i cant stress it enough. Look at a set up on a full size car, it ALWAYS returns to idle with a spring.... failsafes are great, but nothing beats a return spring for consistant actions..every nitro i have had ran one, not one run away.
( after it happened one time) lol

:D It works!
.... And it hauls!
.... And gets chased by the neigbourhood dogs D:
I took a trip to the hobby shop, got myself an Orion 1600 mah RX pack (5-cell) and I swapped out the radio gear, as I've just about had it with the JR XR2i, which seemed to be causing most of the problems. I moved that setup over to my micro RS4, which it works pretty nicely in, but the glitching and problem-causing behaviour is apparent, but much much less a problem in the micro.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h163/BCP_Dave/DSC06291.jpg
So I switched the radio gear to my trusty ol' 2PL and it runs beautifully, again... :D Engine runs pretty good, and it really tears up... well ... everything.
I'm looking to upgrade the clutch system, as the current stock one gets hot like no tomorrow. It's purple-ized the clutchbell
After an insane session of a combination of turning over all the sand at the park, rocketing up and down a parking lot, and playing catch-me-if-you-can with a dog, something got jammed in the center diff and prevented anything from turning. I tore it apart at home to find... nothing. I turned the gears by hand to find that whatever was causing the binding had disappeared  In the process I also gave it a good cleaning (that took 3 hours... :D )
So I'm happy again ;)

Went to the skatepark a few days ago :D
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h163/BCP_Dave/DSC06370.jpg
Lol :D Got some nice ~10 ft jumps off the quarterpipe too. Somehow it's always the small things that get ya. The biggest jumps I've ever done, no problem  I tell you, that slab of concrete jumped out in front of me!
Just before leaving from work at the LHS, I picked up the replacements for the arms, as well as a few other things. I replaced my leaky fuel line too (well, I replaced all the fuel lines..) I sure do love the bright springs :D A large-capacity fuel tank, wing kit (gotta love downforce :D ), and replacement body posts are comin' too :)
