Hi, I have a traxxas stampede with the xl-5 esc. Anyone know if I can upgrade from the stock 12 turn motor to a 10 turn without needing to get a new esc? Not too big of a jump but want to make sure before I really tear something up.

i would just get a better 12 turn, the stock 12 turn isn't really all that great, that motor could probably be outperformed by a checkpoint 17 turn, i would just get a checkpoint or revolution 12 turn, that should have plenty of rip :D just remember to keep it shiny side up, cause these can pull wheelies in T4's :D

you have to remember the stock 12-turn is a 550 size, not a 540. I'm not sure what the 540 motor limit is on that esc but i think a 10 turn is too low. I dont even think you can properly gear a 10 turn on a pede or rustler.

You can't go to a 10 turn on the XL-5. Just go with advice above and get a really good 17 or 15T, that will outperform your stock 12T.

12 turn 550, OR 15 turn 540. this is with zero timing motors. Here's my problem with this,...I'm a Traxxas guy, had great luck with them, over-all, think they are great bashers. Take your car, truck, bike, whatever you drive in real life, get in it, and drive it on the floor everywhere you go. Wont be long, at all, and somethings gonna break. This is Traxxas' mistake in my opinion, by putting in a motor that runs right at the limits of the ESC. Gives NO room for cushion..i dont like that.
As the guys have stated, pick up a good 540 based motor, one a couple turns over the limit of the ESC, a 17 would be perfect, and if you get a good one, yes, it will out-perform that 550 12 turn.the XL-5 will also go to 8 cells, nice touch, so a 19T with a 8 cell pack would REALLY move!

A 19-turn motor on eight cells would wear out pretty fast...

Lol... Yup!
Anyway, wouldn't the Method just wear out even faster, as it is a pretty cheap motor to begin with?

well, the method r is a full bearing motor, and hoenstly, a good 15t in the same make will be a bit better than the 550 12t titan in my opinion.

Yeah... I suppose. It's just that, ball bearing or not, the Method motors still aren't the best quality motors. From what I've heard, they come from a factory that is known for inconsistency. That's just what I've heard though...

I run the Formula Pro BB's... Those are not made in the same factory as the cheaper ones. Again... That's what I've been told though. The source is someone I find to be very reliable so I trust their info.
