hey guys i have a REALLY frickin aggrivating problem with my b3.
ok i got a whole buncha car stuff in the mail yesterday and i basically rebuilt my b3 and put in a 2400 batt. and a gm3pro.
ok so i put it all together and i installed a robinson racing pro aluminum black 24t pinion and a 81 tooth composite spur gear(the one that is supposed to be more duable and more quiet and it is to made by robinson racing)
so i run it and boom, the pinion pops off and the spur gear slowly wore away in the teeth.i keep takin it back to repair it and it always happens the screw in the pinion comes out or gets loose and the spur melts.
it sucks!
i really want these gears to work! the allen screw on the pinion is gonna strip soon so if you have and tips on tightening/loosening allen screws or help on the above problem or both please respond , you guys are my last resort! :(

Whoa..hold on a second. A) if you are melting spur gears, your mesh is WAY too tight, or its binding, or something. B) Is the set screw coming loose in the pinion or is it just spinning off? If its spinning off, move it close in on the arm of the motor (the spur and pinion don't have to be exactly center). If the screw is coming loose, loctite it and see if that helps.

Ok, suggestions-
spur gears- I'd stick with Associated, Kimbrough, or Dumor for an AE car.
pinions- can't go wrong with good ol' steel, be sure to use one with the larger setscrews that take the 1/16" hex driver. Be sure to use a quality driver like the ones made by Associated, Trinity, etc.
gear mesh- be sure the spur gear can rock back and forth ever so slightly once the motor screws are tight. Take your time and do it right, everything will stay quieter and last longer if you do.
I almost never lose a pinion gear and replace gears only occasionally......
those spurs...
are they the clear ones with the metal centers by RR...?
Ive melted 2 of those
T3 90spur 14pinion 11x3mod-motor
I went to the old tried & true "Kimbrough" spurs... not as nice but take heat ALOT better I used to use those clear ones but they're more $,& suck under heat & power.
as far as the pinion...got a good allen wrench? tighten the setscrew till you think it is too tight then that is about right loctight can help too if necessary.
if you trash the setscrew then you got a problem...however I've never striped a RR setscrew...just the aluminum it is in...
Losi pinion setscrews are soft though, I just cut a slot in one to get one out today...I keep a couple of spare hard setscrews along in case.

Loctite on the pinion set screw always.
Do not use aluminum pinions on a b3. They will wear out quickly. Sure, they are light, but will be good for about one lap! Try Robinson "Absolute"(I think) pinions. They are pretty light and very durable.
Examine the teeth on that pinion very closely and see if they are worn. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.

Buggydude, Make shure that your motor isn't running too hot, & that your gear mesh is not too tight. You should have a little free play at the tightest point in the gear's rotation. I would not recomend using locktite on a fresh gear & screw. It's not necesary if you keep a fresh set screw & keep your allen wrench fresh at the tip. Just cut the end of your wrench off to eliminate the worn part. Always use a new set screw whenever you change gears...they're like $.10 each. Make shure you have the right size screw in the pinion. Some use 4-40's & some use 5-40's. The 5-40 will fit into a 4-40 gear but will not tighten down. My boys have had this happen more than once. When ever you go to install a new screw always thread the screw in all the way before installing on the shaft to make sure you have the right size screw. When you go to tighten the screw set the screw lightly, then apply a fair amount of side force to bind the allen wrench sideways in the set screw socket, & then tighten firmly. This will help avoid stripping the screw socket. Hope this helps, Good luck. ;)
