View Full Version : Tamiya F350 Hi Lift 4X4X4--Bruiser reborn?

On Tamiya's website it says This kit is designed to be used only with pre-supplied type 540 motor and pinion gear. Does this mean you can't upgrade to a better motor (novak crawler brushless motor etc.)
Cheers

Well, consider that their responibility towards the customer who otherwise would claim it's Tamiya's fault if the tranny breaks.
The manual also repeats this but I have seen a F-350 with the Novak system and that user reported no problems with the transmission.
I must say though, that I am impressed with the power to the wheels by the stock engine so my recomendation would be to try it out before you replace the stock engine.
My guess is that the only recommend the stock motor since the upcoming Multi Function Unit will also act as ESC and that it will only handle a stock engine. That is, as I see it, the only reason for this.

I took the bone stock motor apart, and put the armature in a speed gem extreme can, and 20* timing, with orion V2 brush set-up endbell,,, what a difference!
Just the little boost this truck needed without going too fast....

faster than stock im assuming in stock form heck its only what 9mph.....I wouldnt mind a 15mph high lift.

Yeah, 15- 20 -30 would be nice :) but in thrid gear, with any traction it justs barrel rolls flips over and over when you give it a little to much steer.....
I probably added 2 mph, and it will dounut in the dirt in thrid gear.. :) ( it did stock , but better now) :), and didn't cost a penny, since I had a old can, and brush hood. And I can say that it's still a stock armed truck..
Yeah, yeah, I could have boughta green machine 27 pro, but that IS aftermarket... I guess I'm "pro-stock" now....

I took a 80 oz servo, and cut the stops out of it, and set the thng so it would stay neutral.
Made "spool" to hold the line, and made a wench...
I bolted it in beside the shifting servo, and it will pick up 9 pounds straight up no problems....

Hello gents this my first forum & my first rc in 9yrs. Putting the kit together was fun. I have a few question. Has anyone ran a modify motor yet? Is anyone having stering problems? Has anyone broken anything yet?

The trucks handling does not yield putting on more power unless you want it on it's roof, and scratching that pretty body up all time.
I have broke nothing on mine.

If I hit something hard , or get it in a bad spot climbing, it flips the steering lever around, at the axle area, (the one that mounts to the frame).

Okay, I have a question here. The Junfac 'lift kit': is this a true lift kit, because to my eyes, it isn't. Now, it looks to be of high quality, and includes a new set of chassis rails (not straight, but curved at the ends), and several other components. What it looks to do to my eyes is to only really lift the body up a little. The transmission stays at a relatively stock height, and the only real reason it looks to be lifted is because the ends of the chassis rails are curved up, lifting up the body.
I thought that lift kits included different shackles and springs to actually lift the entire chassis up for additional ground clearance, which would allow for use of 2.2 wheels and tires. Maybe I am just not seeing what all the kit does, so maybe someone could set me straight. Looks to be a nice kit though :).

i guess I can tell you once I get it...the guy I bought it from said it lifted his chassis up too high for his tastes andthe body gets lifted up also I dont know as long as it has better stability with my wheel wideners from jufac i be happy. right now my truc tips over on turns I want a high performace truck something like an emaxx, but more sale looing I like my emaxx dont get me wrong, but since the high lift came out its more my appeal more scale body wise.
The shackles are longer also it saids on their webpage it only does not look lifted because your looking at the axles the axles I believe the same height from ground, but the chassis itself is lifted by the shackles on top of that the body gets a high lift also :D

Are you not worried about excessive speed with that truck? I know that if I sold my stock Clod and modded TXT for an F-350, I would be worried about tipping. Especially with a 3-speed, I would think the crawler motor would be enough in terms of speed? :)

IF THE 3RD channel is a switch (two way then it wont work) you will need to modify to a 3 way toggle switch. thats what I did to a TQ3 radio setup and works flawlessly.

No I don't see the frame I have on the diaz website. I didn't get it from the Diaz site. I won the whole truck RTR. I don't know if he still makes the High Lift frame...

hey kjr2 - are you running any wheel wideners on your truck? The width looks good but I don't think that can be done with a standard 2.2 wheel?
I'm going to have to ask Will at rcmt about that. There are no actual wideners on it, but I remember him saying somthing about tg10 axles or something like that from another car/truck and wide hexes. Also the DTX wheels have tons of offset. Almost 100%.

Just finished my build. Here's a few pictures with a video of just moving around a little bit, nothing special. So far it has the JunFac lightweight frame, suspension lift and body lift.I ordered RPM Clawz and Moab 2.2's and I just recieved in today the Multifunction control unit. The Attack radio is still on backorder though  . I'll post with the new wheels when I get them :D .

Put it this way, It's a B#$@H! I sanded the body with 1000 grit to remove flashing and imperfections, primed it, let it sit for 24 hours, sanded the primer lightly with 1000 grit to remove any imperfections, washed it, sprayed 2 coats of paint, sanded it with 2000 grit, sprayed another 2 coats, sanded with 2000 grit, sprayed 2 coats of clear sanded it again and 1 final coat of clear. It's a pain in the B&#LS! you really have to take your time, spray light coats and it still drips, runs, collects dust and fisheyes! My shell is not perfect but it's nice. I read on a forum with tamiya club and found 1 guy actually wrote an article with pictures of all the steps he took. Biggest thing is patience, this one took me a week!

RPM Clawz! Here is the RPM page http://www.rpmrcproducts.com/products/wheels/truck/clawz.htm , and I think it would be a safe bet to use Traxxas Stampede *rear* wheels.
I am seriously wanting to get rid of my TXT and Clod to get one of these..... :-\... or maybe my Savage SS and something else....
Ok problem. The Clawz for the stampede rear are not a direct fit. Are people using wheel adapters or wideners? Mine hit the steering link and won't fit  . Is there a widening kit or wheel adapters out there? If anyone knows of this please let me know

okay... so if I'm hearing you right, I need to finish off with some clear coats and then sand with 2000grit sandpaper and one more clear coat?
I'm assuming you sand in one direction only?
crazy4rc
04-27-2007, 09:09 AM
The sanding should go with the body lines but does not have to be perfect. What you want to remove when sanding is the orangepeel and or imperfections like drips and runs. Make sure you put down very light coats!!!! Only sand if you see any imperfections other than that you could leave it alone

Crazy4rc, I figured you would get a second opinion before just purchasing Stampede wheels... :o . I am truly not sure whether you can get a specific set of wheels that fits the F350 without adaptors, or if you need adaptors to fit 2.2s. Run a search on www.rccrawler.com to see what other people are doing, or just ask someone. There is a ton more info and many more builds for F350s there than here. Hope you get this straightened out.
Your truck looks really good though.

Hey guys, quick question. Will pretty much any 4 channel stick radio be easy to use with this truck? Or are there certain ones where the 3 speed shifting will be easier? I'm curious about which stick moves in which directions. Looks like in most cases the right stick is steering left/right, and the left stick has 2 axes. Up and down on the left stick is the throttle, and the gear you're in depends on whether the left stick is to the left, middle, or right. Is this correct? Do all 4 channel stick radios have their stick axes configured this way? Thanks!

A good radio to use is the Futaba Attack 4VWD radio due to the self neutral feature on the left stick. Most radios will work as long as they have 3 channels, I even used a Spektrum DX3 on mine. If you have a High Lift and want the MFC unit go with the Attack.
SS Pede
08-17-2007, 06:31 PM
Thanks. By "self neutral feature" I assume you mean the stick is spring-loaded to return to center.
Do you think a shift gate like the Attack has is necessary, or can you get by without it?
crazy4rc
08-18-2007, 07:01 PM
You can get away without it. When I used the DX3 I shifted while I was moving, I think you could do it damaging it, with no problems.

I'm having some difficulties with the shift servo travel on my high-lift. My radio is a Futaba Attack 4wd, installed per instructions, with shift gate and everything. When shifting from 1st to 3rd on my radio, with the shift servo not connected to the transmission, it travels from approx 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock (12 being 2nd gear). However, that's too much travel for the shift rod in the transmission. The shift rod has much less travel, and forces the shift servo to stop at about 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock when I hook it up. I figured, since I did everything by the manual, it was supposed to be this way. However, the standard Futaba servo (S3003) is quite strong, and it has now stripped the threads on the shift servo link rod. Obviously, something is wrong with my setup. Has anyone else experienced this, or has any suggestions? I already checked if I could move the link ball on the shift servo closer to the center, but it still has way too much travel (and would exert even greater force on to the poor link....).
Cheers,
Paal

Im not sure, but does your transmitter have end point edjustments?
My own question...Is tamiya gonna release a diffrent body for it? Maybe chevy or dodge?
paal71
09-17-2007, 03:23 PM
Thanks for the tip. No, unfortunately not. I even opened the transmitter to see if there were some internal potentionmeters I could adjust. A friend of mine uses a Sanwa radio, which has end point adjustment, so he has no problems. Do I need a special servo, with less travel than the supplied standard servo?
I don't know about different bodies, but I think Tamiya would be making a great mistake if they don't make more cars using the high lift "platform".
This is my first posting by the way. My first car was the Tamiya F-150 Ranger XLT back in the early eighties. I dreamed about getting the Blazing Blazer back then, but it was just too expensive. It still is, but then the high lift arrived, and I was 12 years old again :-)
Great forum, by the way!

Did you try a short servo arm and adjust the linkage rod manually? I use the MFC unit and it has an end point adjustment feature and a shift point adjustment on it so I didn't come across this problem. When I had the Spektrum DX3 radio it had all the adjustments also.

I am picking up the MFU next week, so that is really great news. Much thanks for the tip! Otherwise, your solution with shorter servo arm is of course the best fix. I was just a little surprised that things didn't work correctly right out of the box with Tamiya. But then, my last Tamiya kit was 24 years ago.... :o

Nice pics Kjr. Those tires really looks nice.
This is a somewhat pointless post but after seeing all the awesome High-Lifts in this post I went out on Saturday and got myself one...
I'm just getting the electrics installed now and then after I've fixed whatever mistakes I've made, onto the bodyshell! I will post some pics when I've finished (could be a while with all the paint/prep work!).
I think I'll go for a gloss black finish, but I'm still undecided although I know I want to go for the scale look when its all complete, with lots of nice little details here and there.
Cheers folks...

im planning on buying the hilux highlift but i wanted to know what websites can i go to for parts?
Hi to all
I got F350 earlier but I guess have to have the Hilux too, and still half way building it, with nostalgic feeling of the '80s. Since I can't get a NIB Bruiser or Mountaineer due to its price, then it's younger brother with similar body would do... :)
Stock, Hilux body sits about 1" higher than F350, so can use bigger tires with no other mod needed...another reason why I bought it.
Now waiting to see in person the new Land Cruiser, and another nostalgic Pajero rere... Tamiya really have good products coming nowadays IMHO...some old some new... love the scale looks when they move!
still unfinished rides...

That's a good question...I still haven't gotten a Hi-Lift so I can't contribute much...maybe someday.
Random question. The stock Hi-Lift doesn't seem to have a whole lot of center ground clearance. Is this a big issue for people, and how have you been dealing with it? I imagine some of the aftermarket chassis kits might help. Any mods that can be done to the stock chassis/undercarriage to help out? Can that big honking skid plate be taken off, and if so would you even want to do that?
