Isn't 3.5 amps kind of a low charging rate for ni-cd batteries?? wouldn't the punch of the batteries suffer especially with my 2400's ???

Most likly they would almost kill the battery.
Get a new charger

Sometimes I wonder where you guys get your information from.
3.5 amps will not "kill" or even harm a battery in the least little minute tiny bit.
In fact if you charge at 3.5 amps your battery packs will more than likely last through many more charge cycles then if you charge at 5 or 6 amps.
What you will notice at 3.5 amps is a loss of the "punchiness" you describe, and they batts will lose the high voltage they were zapped with.
But in no way shape or form will 3.5 amps harm a battery. In fact the 5 and 6 amp rates are what turns your batteries into junk faster.
With packs I'm gonna bash with I charge at 2 amps and get better runtimes and a small drop in voltage but not enough to really notice while screwing around. And my batts have more MAH than when they were new and will last for many more cycles than my friends who charge at 5 amps because they think they can use every last millivolt.
And lastly the new 300s cells that the Nimh was designed for are supposed to be charged at 3.5 to 5 amps and no more, or risk damage to the cells.

All it would do is the battery life span would be greater, give less punch, and take longer to charge. It would not harm the battery.
