Does it hurt the cells to charge them at 5 amps? I have 1500s and 2400s

No... A lot of people will tell you to charge at no more than 4 amps, but I've been charging at 4.5 amps for two years with no problems. As long as you discharge and charge properly, your cells will last a long time.

I read somewhere that you can charge the NiCds at 2.5X the capacity safely (i.e. 5 amps for a 2000mah battery etc.) as long as the cells are in good shape. If you think the condition of your batteries are questionable, charge them at 2X the capacity.
I have a 1700 pack, several months old and run many, many times, that I charge at 5 amps (nearly triple the capacity) and it runs very strong.
The only thing about your 1500 is that with a higher amp charge, you'll get more voltage out of it but shorter run time. If you're racing with them, a good balance of power and runtime might be 4 amps for the 1500. For the 2400, 5 amps is good.

Yup, 5 amps shouldn't be a problem. in fact, that's what I've been charging my packs at for several years with no problems(except for NiMh's, I'd charge them at a lower current, maybe 4-4.5 amps just for safety)... :)
