West Coast Editor Jason Sams reports on the new trug, trackside at the ROAR Gas Nats...

Losi 8T notes (what we know this far)
- Almost the entire truck Adam Drake and Travis Amezcua are running have production specs. They didn't necessarily say this, but this is what I observed. Only the shock towers, tank, and suspension arms are pre-production.
- The 8ight-T uses most of the same components as the 8ight.
- Its narrow chassis gives the illusion that the truck is long, but it looks to be similar length of current truggies.
- No word from Losi on when it will be released.

Very cool

Yep the truck/chassis does look long.. look how much room there is behind the engine.. I don't know if its the illusion of the narrow chassis or that everything is crammed towards the front and center..

And geeeshh... Those arms sure are beefy! :D

Should sell like hot cakes

I suspect the extra arm beef is because they're machined proto parts. Let's see what Jason says...

They should leave them like that, more plastic = more durable.

I doubt it will be out before christmas but i sure hope it is!

Sweet looking truggy.

As for those wanting the arms to be super beefy. Come on now guys. Think about it. If you make one part stupid strong, what happens? You don't stop breaking stuff, you just break different stuff. A broken arm is easy to replace. A broken diff case/hingepin mount is a PITA to replace. You guys have have your meaty pre-production arms if you want. I'll take the lightweight production arms that will snap before the parts they're bolted to do.

Hope they keep it reasonably priced... Hope its about $600. Have a feeling it might be up by the Kyosho in price... If its up there in the 700's i'm gonna have to get myself a Jammin (which i was planning on doing until i saw this :) )

For $100, is it worth it to settle for anything less than the 8ight truggy? $100 in this hobby is one tiny trip to the LHS where you just went to get a glow plug. Buy the 8ight truggy, dont worry about the price.

PeterV

Snick, NO ONE goes to the hobby shop for a GLOW PLUG and winds up spending 100 BUCKS. That's just DUMB.

My guess on Price would be in the $600 + range, The Buggy is going to be in $550 range with no motor, So for a Pro level Truggy I would think it would be very close to the same price as the Kyosho or Mugen, Jammin still looks like the way to go as far as price goes, durability, parts, set up advice...Tough combination to beat...I wanted to be different and bought a "different" Truggy...Now I'm paying for it...It will be a while before I can buy another Truggy... :( I would sell mine but I would never get any where close to the amount of money that I have into it. If I was going to start "fresh" I would wait on the Losi8...see how the buggy holds up, what sorta of problems they are having with it. You don't want to buy "the test". The last few years Losi does not have the best track record. So for me it's going to be a wait and see. Kyosho tried the forward motor placement a few years back and look at where their motor is now...Right where everyone Else's is...LOL...But I'm sure the Team guys will have a "further to the rear" motor mount chassis that they will use for 6 or so months then make it available to us racers...Old habits are hard to break...lol

 I know they have some good drivers but what amazes me is that Losi can come into the 1/8th scale game with a little more than zero experience in building 1/8th scale racing buggies and quite literally put the smack down fresh out of the gate...with pre-production cars and truggies at that. I suppose it's not that amazing as they've always been known for exceptional design and innovation but daaaum. Way to go Losi...this truck looks like the hot ticket. Personally I like the lower wing...hey...whatever works baby.

z-man280
09-25-2006, 06:52 PM
I'm not too surprised. Losi and Associated are like the Ferrarii and Porsche of the r/c world in my opinion. One can come out with something, and its just a matter of time before the other does...and run at the top..so ya all know what this means

Adanmtxt1
09-25-2006, 07:12 PM
I know?! Losi has practically no experience building up a monster and *poof*, RCCA Truck of the Year, and a big hit with consumers. The buggy? Poof, successful. Truggy? Ha ha, I wonder what will happen.

I am anticipating an Associated buggy or truggy. It kinda does seem like Porsche, building high-performance vehicles, that will eventually give in and build an SUV.

Mini-TBasher55
09-25-2006, 07:21 PM
I have doubts as to whether this truggy will be able to trample the competition. That Kyosho STR looks sweet, but I have no idea how it does in comps. I think the A Team needs a new truggy, Nitro TC4, and a mini tc!

I am also curious how this more forward mounted engine will affect things. I have been hearing that if the traction is there for the buggy version anyway, it works well, but when its not it doesn't work that well due to the position of the engine.

I have some in mine depending on price or the 8ight-t. Wanna hear them? Well your gonna cause i'm bored right now.

I'm probably going to end up with a .28 in there but anyways...

Axial .28 Spec1 (http://www.smfstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=196_45&products_id=564) I'm thinking i'll need more top-end than this will give.
Ninja .21 (http://www.smfstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=196_203&products_id=755) Wow, this was definitely cheaper yesterday right? :D
Ninja .28 (http://rczonecentral.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=91_93&products_id=554) This looks freaking awesome.
Picco .28 Team Turbo (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/products_id/5099) Not a big fan of Turbo plugs
Os 30Vg (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/products_id/6009) Does it have the revs??
Drake .28 (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/products_id/7672) Drake engine in a Losi truggy seems good. Heard nothing tho...
Werks Team line .28 (http://rczonecentral.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=91_93&products_id=1835) Looks nice...

Yea I hope they do keep it under $700. Even so I would buy it , Losi has Always been the Innovators. Just 1 thing, with adam having some R&D into it,will there be like An AdamDrake version of this truggy. Like Losi did with the xxx-NT, 1st edition xxxnt AD >xxxNT2 or AD2. First of all, you don't need to capitalize every word in the sentence.

Secondly, it's "where," not "were."

Third, "The Dune Buggy Version." is not a complete sentence.

And finally...there is more than one page in the "Hot News and New Stuff Forum" (http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=226088).

To TQ the first race it even been used at is pretty good. Drake got hacked pretty good when he was leading, knocking him out for 20 minutes while he changed parts. Travis finished 4th with his, but i guess because it wasnt 1st, its just not good enough.

I dont ever remember hearing about kyosho, mugen, or jammin prototypes winning national title races. Espcially the first version to ever get raced.

Kyosho Wone thier Debut race, and Mugen...
But your right, It was still an amazing contender, and its probably the better truck having amazing weight distribution. Competition is getting fierce now so their less chance for anyone winning.

As far as I'm concerned, a TQ says a whole heck of a lot more about a car's ability to win in the right hands than the main. So much can go wrong in the longer mains.

I'd feel more confident about a car's deisgn if a driver dominated qualifying with it compared to if he happened to be the driver who had the least problems (driving mistakes and mechanical) in the 45-60min main and won.

well the fact that you just asked about it means someone will mistake it as fact, and go tell there friends. Then they will starting asking when it will be released, hence a rumor.

ROFL - I have been thinking the same thing every since he posted that!

All this speculation is driving me nuts. Our racing season started about a month ago and goes thru April. Unlimited MT is the fastest growing class at our track and I would really like to a truggy. Someone out there has to have some inside information as to when this thing is going to be released.

If I buy a Muggy or the Kyosho or something else and this thing comes out in early January I am going to be ticked. If I sit on the fence and it doesn't come out until July I am also going to be ticked...

I am also considering the buggy 8ight instead but the truggy racing is going to be the hottest class in the country before long.

Patience, Patience, Patience...

I understand you feelings. I think with losi shooting for christmas release and alot of the parts looking production quality, its a good chance that it might make it for a christmas or januray release.

I would say wait off. Either way if you buy now and it doesnt come out till july, youll still be ticked because youll most likely have alot of parts for that truck and have to get new ones for this one. I would say get the 8ight buggy for now, and when the truggy comes out if you still want to run another class look into getting one then.

body mounts.
Gearing on the spur, outer diff gears and probably also the pinion gear...

youll be better off buying a new 8ight-t

or ditch the long arms and get hub extenders and just increase the spur gear and decrase the CB...

if not youll need:

chassis - $90
arms - $25
turnbuclkes - $30
tires and wheels - $80
body - $23
driveshafts - $36x2 + 40
outer gears - $30x2 plus spur $30
body mounts $10

which makes $460... which alot of money!

i took a bit off the prices too from the parts of a CRT off A Main Hobbies

It is an assembled race roller. You will need your elecs and your motor as well as the header and pipe. You will also need your servos and if applicable your transponder unit. Also need to layout a paint scheme for the unpainted body with is included with the kit.

I already picked mine up today from my rc supply. So far everything looks great.
I have driven the buggy version, and if the wider stance and repositioned arms do there job as designed, then this thing should dominate this next season! w00t

How well does the 8ight-T lend itself to brushless conversion? How easy was it to convert the 8ight buggy? Did the narrow chassis give you any trouble?

schenck77
03-01-2007, 08:00 PM
the biggest thing about converting them is making a motor mount. other then that he changed the spur to a kyosho plastic one, flipping the diff so the motor shaft will reach and mounting the battery on the opposite side. here is a link to mine that I did very similar to GD's.

I should have some CNC motor mounts very soon. That's the only hard part. THere are several options for securing hte battery. I think they make an awesome conversion.

PM me if you are interested in a mount... should be under $50 shipped if things go as they are supposed to at the machine shop.

schenck77,

Thanks for your reply. The photos are helpful. I've been lurking about at RC Monster's forum looking for all the photos and info I can find.

glassdoctor,

I may take you up on your offer. I'm still trying to decide between the Losi and the XRAY buggies. One thing putting me off the Losi is the Imperial hardware, which means none of my existing stash of spare screws will fit, and I'll have to get some new hex drivers. Do you find the offset position of the center diff to be helpful? Is the narrowness of the chassis an issue?

I notice that neither of you kept the brake servo or brakes. It seems that the brakes would take some load off the motor. What are your thoughts on this issue?

I raced it last weekend... it's pretty dialed. It drives a little like the buggy... it has lots of steering and is a little skatey in the rear on power, out of the box. Some guys don't like the way the losis feel but it suits me fine. If you come from a 1/10 buggy background like I do, you probably will like the 8ights...

But I'm not the best to rate it because I have only raced truggy twice before, with my Jammin CRT, lol... and that was at a different track.

I like the Jammin too, btw... and I had similar results racing it.

If that thing handles like or has anywhere close to the success of the 8ight buggy, then this is sure to be in the top ten for MANY MANY races. It also helps Losi when they have people like Amezcua and Drake driving their rigs- they could make a T-maxx win a truggy race (lol)

I like the stock Losi tires. I ran at the track over the weekend, and while the track was moist, the Losi tires had good hookup and sidewall bite... Monday night the track was starting to dry out. The Losi tires would still hook up, but not quite as well when the track is dry. The corners were especially dry and loose, making it hard to control the T coming out of the corners. A little less trigger action on the throttle helped that situation. I haven't really ran any of the new Prolines as of yet. Last season I was running a MT with Panther Pythons, as well as Boas on cutdown wabash wheels. They were both clay compound for the dry track conditions, and ms for the wetter tracks... I would like to try the Bowtie Mtrs as well as the Holeshots and probably will this season.
Can't say on the Kyosho vs the 8ight T. I bought the 8ight T and I am very satisified with it. It works well for my style of driving and really fits the track I run at great...

Is that the OS V-Spec 21 or the more economical OS 21 VG? Can't tell. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Was also wondering if $589.99 plus shipping is about the best deal out there on the truggy? Thanks.

Check out Bmainhobbies.com. Add the truggy to your cart to see the price, and save yourself 40 bucks.

The paint will be changing slightly on the next go around. But this will make a great practice body.

Both cars looks great:)
I`ll post some pics as soon as im done with mine.
I was wondering how the o.s performs in the truggy seems like most off the pros use 21`s not 28`s.
Fuel economi is better but are they powerfull enough? ive seen the vid clip and the car flies but they are also great engine tuners and dont have the concerne off destroying a engine once in a while.

The OS works great in the 8ight T... It has more than enough power for the tracks I run on... I have since switched to a Nova P5X. It works well also... My OS was getting tired and needs a new P/S... I know of a few people that have run a .28, and have since switched to a .21 due to to being to hard to handle the extra power of the .28's... Other people like the .28's... It's all a personal choice... My self, I can't see me ever using a .28 in my 8ight T...

Horizon encourages purchasing from an LHS rather than them, that is why the prices are higher if you order from them.
