Yup, you got it. How to k.i.s.s., or, keep it simple stupid! This is strictly for those who are a bit intimidated of painting. By NO MEANS do i think of myself as a pro, but for all of us ametuers, heres a simple single color paint job...
i think the results are decent, and ANYONE can get these results.
So for all you a bit nervous to paint,...this one is for you!!!
grab some tools, this is basically what i use:
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070054Small.jpg
lets get a body first:
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070026Small.jpg
and oogle at the decal sheet...
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070028Small.jpg
ok, enough drooling, lets get it prepped. I just use good ole' dish soap and hot water..
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070029Small.jpg
and dry it off.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070031Small.jpg
mask off those window with included mask, and lets paint!!
Rattle cans, thats it here. Mist your first few coats to ensure a clean look, with no runs. this is after 4 coats:
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070032Small.jpg
a few more coats later, did ya get all the corners???

take a peek, make sure you got it all covered. Now, time to back it up. I find that white works with light colors, black for darker. You can lighten or darken almost a full shade by choosing your backing color.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070036Small.jpg
let it dry...give it overnight if ya can. Patience plays a key role here.
Ok, time to get going...i usually trim the large flashing off....
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070038Small.jpg
if your body came with a protective film, peel it now. Ok, decals. This is where you need to have some patience...trim close, take your time, and the results will show..
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070046Small.jpg
I lay my window and light decals first, if you have anything that may overlap them, it gives you a nice guideline for taking that razor knife, and trimming it... then i will come back, and rub all the decals down flat.. making those little "humps" go away makes all the difference.
did i mention, trim decals CLOSE??
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070045Small.jpg
this one crosses the light, so with the light already there, i can see where i need to trim the over-lapping decal after i lay it down. Now, i will smooth out those "humps" around the light..
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070040Small.jpg
yup, 15 decals right there....not including the 4 for the taillights!!
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070048Small.jpg
after i apply decals, and i am happy with the look, i will take my razor knife and score all the way around the body. You dont have to dig deep either, just follow the body lines where to trim, and begin to "peel" it away.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070052Small.jpg
body reamers work best here, but if you dont have one, go SLOWLY with a drill, it will work.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070050Small.jpg
and now, our newly painted, mounted body!!
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070061Small.jpg
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070057Small.jpg
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/z-man280/P9070060Small.jpg
remember guys, this is NOT a hard job, and the results are good. It wont win any competitions, but it will make a few people take notice.
hope you enjoy!!!
(p.s.---yeah mud, i painted it yellow! :p )

Sorry but im not hip and cool but what is the 56K on every thread supposed to mean??
CarbonMadness

I think it deals with the pic size, and internet connection speed.
z-man280
09-07-2006, 05:10 PM
correct, a 56k modem, or dial-up, tends to have difficulties on loading pages with larger pics and such. If you are not on ideal phone lines, it can even time-out, or cancel the loading of the page. %6k refers to 56,000 kbps internet speed. I am on a cable conenction, so i connect roughly at 280,000 kbps, or 2.8 meg.a 56k is connecting at 1/2 meg, at optimal conditions.( these are just guideline numbers)
Therefore, 56k beware!

Please give me guidance on how to 'kiss'. I am a lonely sociopath who dwells in his basement oogoling young women over the internet, one day hoping to find a perfect match.
Nice starter thread, Z-man!

Love it! I'm partial to the Bug body anyway, but it's nice that you didn't scare anyone. Goes to show a little prep, proper decal application, and patience can produce a nice shell.

thank you. Even tho i have painted bodies before, ( not alot tho) i dont really think that being a first body, or 50th body, that this is a hard procedure.
CWD, that is exactly the point that i wanted to make! time and patience can produce nice reults without having to get into mulit-colored, air brushed bodies...althogh they are very nice. my next body will require the airbrush..

I've painted a handful myself, only for my own cars, all rattlecan, by no extent of the imagination more than amateur. I'll post pics of the shells I have kicking around the garage still.
I have an airbrush, but haven't painted an RC shell with it yet. No paint. It sure does give you more options, at least in shading, texture, etc.

Well, even tho i am sure there are some who will argue this,... i have used createx paints for a long time for my airbrush on rc bodies. its cheap, and even tho it is water-based,it works just fine.I always back my bodies with pactra rattle can in either sprint white or black, and have not had any ill effects from the two combining( albiet i let the colors dry before appling the backign color).
The 350z was airbrushed with a single action air brush pruchased at harbor frieght and tools for $5.00
when it comes time to do a mural, t-shirt, hat, comforter, pillow case, or a detailed body, i break the VL out. Again, not an expensive one by any means, ( left handed, $80)

Hey, Z-Man, I just noticed that you and I are practically neighbors. About an hour's rip south on 127 and you would be in my backyard. I live in Durand, Mi.

Not sure, it might be the picture. The suspension is set pretty high, but the body is sitting normal (to me)...

the sticker humps can't always be rubbed down... in those cases, slit the hump and overlap the two sides. Curved surfaces are horrible for decals. You have to slit all over the place.

yes, very true. I do find in that case tho, there is a bit ( i do mean very little) elasticity in the decal, and can be stretched ever so slightly to help comform.
on some tho, you simmply dont have that option, Aluma, thanks for the added info i forgot :)

Hay, I had an rs4 MT back when it first came out, and I did my first custom paint job on it. This was pre-airbrush days, yep I did it with cans. I built this truck to race against a Stampede and a Rustler on a little back yard track. I smoked them every time with the 4WD, while they had all the fun racing for 2nd...

Oh, it hooked up pretty good, especially with 7 cells and a Reedy 12 t hand wound motor, plus I had it geared really low for the little track we where on. The belts did where out a lot faster with that set up, but it was fast!
