i dunno about racing but if you plan on working on your car, they would help quite a bit. ;)

A pit mat is great to have, but not neccassary. As for a light it depends on if your racing day time or evenings. If your racing evenings then it is a must.

I'd highly recommend a pit towel whenever you work on your, especially at races. It may not be required, although it is a nice courtesy if you race inside to keep the table clean. Mainly the greatest benefit is that the towel helps keep all your small pieces from rolling off the table when you wrench on your car. It also makes them easier to find if you have a towel and a light. I'd suggest good lighting and a towel whenever you work on your car, especially at races where it could be easy to mix up small parts with the people sharing your table.

The light is a different issue. If your track has a good lighting system, then it isn't necessary. These days I do most of my racing indoors on carpet, and my track has excellent overhead lighting so I don't bring my light to races anymore. However when I used to race offroad, I also needed a light so I could wrench on my car. The track was lit with floodlights, but if you got stuck on one of the far pit tables light was always scarce as evening rolled in along with the last mains of the day. Check out the lighting situation at your track, and then decide for yourself. The first time you go I'd bring everything you can think of including a light and a towel. If you decide you won't need them next time thats fine. Deciding that there was something you really should have brought but left at home is a much more difficult situation, and it can potentially end your day at the track.

As far as what other things you might want to bring to the track, it all depends on your car. Nitro/electric, etc. etc.

I bring

• Stop Watch
• Paper Towels/Rags/Wipes
• Extra Controller Battery (Charged)
• Power Supply and Charger
• Tool Kit w/ Ratchets etc.
• Discharger & Adapter
• Tape
• Extra Rx Crystals
• Reamer/Scissors
• Allen Wrenches
• Charger/Power Supply Instructions (Always important when your starting out)
• Car Assembly Instructions
• Extra Parts
• Pocket Knife/Exacto Knife
• Needle Nose Pliers
• Clippers/Scissors
• Money ($5 track fee + any replacement parts needed)
• Soldering Iron
• Wire Strippers
• Zip-Ties
• Pen or Pencil
• ROAR Card
• Pit Towel
• Portable Light (if needed)
• Extra Body & Clips

You'd be surprised by everything you need to bring for a day at the track. Of course I've left a few of the obvious things out i.e. (Car, batteries for car, etc. etc.)

What you bring kinda depends on type of racing and things you might want so you can work on car and be comfortable.
Outdoor racing - bench, table or those folding pinic tables with a canopy or umbrella. Comfort items cooler w/water, snacks or soda.
Pit box containing tools, spare parts, motors, tires etc.
Indoor racing - chair or stool unless provided by track - comfort items.
Again items you'll need to fix or maintain car.

Pit towels or something to cover work or pit area may be required at some tracks and just something to keep parts from flying away or keep things sorted. I also use those stackable shelves from Wal Mart that always me to put charger, power supply, battery/motor cases, soldering iron all in one place without taking up a lot of extra space. All are within reach and view when I'm working on car - a third or fourth shelf may be used for laptop (record race data), or extra tires and stuff that might be needed.
