I just became the proud owner of a Jet Stream 800 that my friend found in his attic and i have a few questions about it. i have had many gas and electric powered cars and trucks over the years but this is my first boat. i want to run 12 cells in it but i need to find a motor/prop combonation. i care the most about speed even though its only a single electric motor powering it. any help is apreciated and any other modifications i can do on a reasonable budget pleas let my know. thanks guys, i apreciate it!

Several club members have had this boat over the years, and it is a good entry-level mono. Designed for 6 cell use, it uses a single 05-sized motor which is not really suitable for 12 modern cells....they will burn the motor up rapidly and it will require a lot of maintenance. Too, the stock speed control will burn up almost immediately on 12 cells. This boat is just too big for a single 05 motor if speed is your goal.

What is a reasonable budget to you? The easiest/cheapest mods are to go to seven high-performance race cells (4200s for example) and a larger prop. The speed controller will not last too long even with this setup, especially if you use part throttle very much. And the outdrive is weak, give it much more power and it will start to break parts - expensive hard-to-find parts. You will find the gearbox will fail too. All these parts were designed for the battery power available ten years ago, they will not live long hopped up with modern power. And being inexpensive plastic, the lose strength with time, particularly if stored in a hot attic for years....

Probably the best mod is to replace the motor with a 700 8.4 volt type, a good marine electronic speed controller, 12 good 4200 cells and toss the gearbox and outdrive for a flex cable drive. This will give speeds in the 30s, good reliability, and better handling. How to do this is found below, although another boat is shown the idea is the same:

I really don't want to discourage you from experimenting with the boat, but many others have done so before you and have learned what works and what doesn't. Sopending a lot of time and money on a boat which will end up not pleasing you is not a wise move. If you want real speed, sell the JetStream and get a better base to build on. A vintage JetStream, depending on condition, will still bring a few bucks on eBay.

thanks alot for the input. i have decided to leave the boat the way it is and just have fun with it. my uncle is a carpenter so i might try to make a hull with him when ever he has time. i have a vintage tamiya Midnight Pumkin and and a tamiya Lunch Box van on a shelf and i think this boat will look nice up there with them. ill have to take it down every now and then and make some wake at the local reservoir though! :)
thanks again for your help.
