I'm thinking about getting a 12 turn mod motor for my tamiya mini cooper once I get a duratrax streak esc. What motor would you guys recomend and what should I do about the gearing(I am totally cluless when it comes to gearing). This would be really helpful, I can wait until I save up enough money.

Can a Streak ESC handle a 12 turn motor? Most escs have a turn limit, other wise, poof. You might want to try a better esc if you want to go with a mod like that.

If you can spend the $100, get a Novak Fusion, and a Trinity speed gems 2 Garnet 13 turn double wind. This is a set up I had and it worked great. I ordered a Novak dually last night from Tower hobbies. And I got an 11 turn speed gems 2 Topaz 11 turn triple. I suggest you get the fusion and the garnet though. It pushed my rustler to around 40. I just bought new brushes and had the garnet comm cut. You want to buy it? $25, including shipping. Also, you can have my fusion if you like. It has water damage (I had 3 balloons on it during the winter, but it still managed to fry) but you can send it to Novak and have it like brand new for only $25. I'll sell it to you for $30. If you want, you can get a speed gems from tower hobbies for only $27 though, and a Fusion for around $72. It is a sweet set up. I suggest get a bunch of gears, and try them all, and see what's best for where you run at. And what makes you happy. I can't give any suggestions.
The Garnet has a D3.5 armature in it, and that will give you loads of torque too. There are a few other that have it also. I think there is a 10 turn, and soemthing like a 16 turn. What set up do you have now? Make sure you can drive well before you go too fast. lol. I learned that the hard way.

The streak handles up to 12turn motors , Ive seen a few folks with a streak and ran it with a 12t and they said it worked fine .so go for it!

Maybe it's just me, but I'd be willing to bet a 12 turn is way too much power for a mini cooper, no matter how you gear it. If it were me, I'd guess no less than 15 turns. Even then all it'll do is spin the tires.
Just my opinion.

ZenLosi has it right, those minis simply can't put that much power down, especially with Tamiya's tires on them. Personally, I wouldn't recommend anything hotter than a 17-19 turn, & that may still be pushing it. To improve its speed, really a ROAR stock motor will do just fine, they have plenty more power & top end over Tamiya's Mabuchi/Johnson motors(the ones that come with the cars)..... http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well I'm thinking about getting a 12 turn just because it would be really fun. Also I would buy better tires than the stock tamiya ones. Oh and greg could you e-mail me a drummer5us@hotmail.com and we can discuss me buying one of your motors further.

With a 12 turn there's a good chance your
gearbox will be all over the road.
They don't recommend 12 turns for most tamiya cars except their good tcs.
If you want to try it anyways gearing could be tricky but i would go for a high gear ratio to keep very little stress as possible on the transmission.

Those little Tamiyas are stronger than you think. 6 years ago Tamiya offered a M chassis motor. IT was a short can motor, only the endbell stuck out of the transmission. That little motor was one of the smoothest I have ever had. Fast as **** to. Not sure if they still make it or not. I also ran a Speed Gems Quartz motor in it with no problems at all. I miss that little car...

Well before I get a mod motor I'm gonna buy a p2k pro stock rebuildable motor to get used to higher speeds than the stock tamiya but maby after I get more money and hop the car up some more I'll consider getting a mod motor.

Yeah they still make the M chassis special motors (they are green) In a mini they are all good, I dont think I would like much else in one.. Mine only has the option of 16,18 or 20t pinion.

ya know, I just sold some paintball gear, when I get the cash, I might pick me up one of the newer mini coopers. Hobby People have em for 89 bucks. Get me a Manta Ray ball dif, bearings, and a M Chassis motor, and Shwing! Who still makes bodysfor minis and does Proline still make the mini tires? those things stuck like glue.

Well I think I'm gonna go with 17x1t with either a 21 tooth pinion or a 24. I was talking to some one on the chat and they said it might be a tight squeeze to get it in there but they fit. Or I could just get the opional motor mount once I get more money. HPI makes mini bodies for their version of the mini and I think they should fit on the tamiya ones, also I've been looking for some new tires or maby even some rally tires that'll fit. If you find some try to get a hold of me either through e-mail or on this post. I would definatly suggest buying a mini they are sooooo fun!

Well, I ordered my Mini today. Going to get a HPI VW Minibus body to race it. Going with HPI Mini tires and tamiya ball diff, and of course bearings. Hard part is going to be finding another M Chassis Motor. IF anyone knows of a dealer that stocks them, please post it.
