View Full Version : Which Electric Off-road?

I'm intersted in an electric off road to have some fun with and then start racing in some local track races.
I saw the new Dirt Spec Triple-X in RCCA May 2001. - interest peaked.
A RC10T3 "Facory Team" version was recomended to me as well...
Should I consider others, which one is better?
I'm a little concerned with all these stories of missing pieces and things of that nature. I'm used to Tamiya on-road electrics and their high quality (instruction and Quality Control wise).
I want something that's got lots of hop-ups available and is respectable around the off-road crowd.
Thanks!

Well these stories your hearing are just that..."stories".
I love my XXX-T and have nothing but good things to say about this little truck. Im not to sure on the dirt-spec tho, i don't have much info on it. The XXX-T has a ton of hop-ups out there, graphite, aluminum and so on. Just put it this way there are so much hop-ups for it that i already have the Kinwald Edition before it even came out even tho it isn't the real kit. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Now on to the FTT3. It already has the hop-ups (which i don't like cuz i rather choose my hop-ups) and is a good little truck. Even tho mine had problems when i had it i still liked it till i got my hands on the XXX-T. I have nothing to say bad about either trucks.
I like the XXX-T cuz of the layed back driving style and is very easy to tune besides where the servo is placed. I don't mine the servo being where it is because it helps the truck and feels more smooth on the track.
The FT T3 has to be pushed harder to stay on a smooth line. Some ppl like this and some don't. People that perfer a layed back driving style truck go for the Losi and others want something they have to push and feels better to them like the Associated.
Its all about what you want and like, and there really is no downside to either truck and don't break easy like the AE guys say about the Losi XXX-T.
Downside to me:
AE FTT3-needs better handling
Losi XXX-T- the place where the servo is placed is hard to get to when in a hurry.
FLIP a COIN is all i gotta say. Sorry about the long long story.

Long stories rock man. Thanks a lot for your opinion. That's what I hear, they're bad on QA and that that's just a story, so I don't know what ot believe...
I think I am going to get a XXX-T Dirt Spec. The new RCCA gave it great ratings and I would like to start with that and see what hop ups I want for it later on, since I'm new to off-road. I'll definetly get the bearings for it though.
And....I guess I prefer "layed back" driving...
Thanks!

Its all good, you can't go wrong with the Dirt-Spec.
My bro just got one a day ago and he loves it. It only took him 3 and 1/2 hours to build, thats about the same time it took me to build my XXX-T without painting the body.
He wants to turn his Dirt-Spec into a XXX-T like mine.....the only thing holding him back is cash flow http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif !
Bearings are going to help the Dirt-Spec ALOT! Beware of the funky smelling tires tho....my bro washed his like a million times because of the smell... LOL
On your knees to the ol mighty XXX-T http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

hey animeking
Dont be hasty. Im not going to tell you to buy AE or Losi. I will tell you that if want alot of hop ups, you dont want the losi spec truck. The reason they call it a spec truck is that its designed to run in a spec class. This means your supposed to leave it stock(motor,tires,etc..)to run with others the same way. So unless you have about 4 buddies with losi spec trucks to make a class at your local track (which is probably Larrys or Freedom hill in Utica) you will be running in a standard truck class which will put you at a disadvantage. You also dont want the rtr t3. I know. You think I dont like either of your top picks. Far to the contrary. If you buy a truck, then I recommend one not put together. This way you assemble it and learn were everything goes and how, believe me, you will break stuff racing and have to take it apart anyway. This will help in so many ways you wouldnt beleive me if I listed them out.
All in all my recomendation to you is buy which ever one you like(losi is to AE like Ford is to Chevy)once you own one you probably wont care for the other.(layed back driving? whatever! The guy that said his brother got one two days ago and loves it, but already wants to make it a REAL XXXT. Reason enough to listen to me ??
Keep in mind Losi is only distributed by one company now if you need parts. If you do go to Larrys in Utica you shouldnt have to worry about that though.
Feel free to write if you have any questions. matmatcadillac@webtv.net
You did say long was cool didnt you?

P.S. I used to live right down M59 in Brighton
Hears what you do...or how you choose rather...do you like Lazy Sunday(Losi) or Mardi Gras(Fat Tuesday, Associated). Associated cars are still easy to drive...mine is awesome(although I have problems with electronics). I helped my friend build his XXX-T Spec...and even though it drives well(lazy style) it looks hideous...I felt quesy actually. What with the weird suspension arms and steering geometry...hideous. DO you want a hideously ugly car? Its realy not aestheticly pleasing...the T3 on the other hand...hoho...this thing is tight.

I agree with what matmatcadillac said about not getting an RTR or a spec truck but I personally think the new Losi spec truck and buggy are awesome looking! I find myself wanting one just because they look cool,... especially those tires http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
From what I know about the AE and Losi trucks, either is a great choice. I would suggest getting what your buddies are driving. Or what the LHS stocks the most parts for. My TC is an AE so I want to get a Losi truck for the dirt,... If I'm too brand loyal, I'll never know what each has to offer.
good luck
