Anybody use a Portasol iron for general use? Are they adequate heat/wattage to assemble a battery pack? I was looking at buying the Weller PSI100K. Thanks.

The 100c/k is a great iron with plenty of heat to assemble a battery pack. The Ultratorch gets hotter but the Weller is a lot less fussy about the type of fuel you use.

I have a little Off brand butane iron, it's not too bad. I can solder wires, deans and other stuff, but batteries is not doable with mine.

If you have the one with the igniter in the cap then yeah that one is really not good enough for RC use

I use that iron to solder everything.

I use that at work all the time. Best tool I ever bought. Weller says it is the equivalent of a 120Watt iron.

Are you guys makeing sub C packs with it? Where are you pointing flame? and for how long? You must like it better than electric iron?

i dont think u use the flame to solder stuff.....
It comes witha cone shape tip that u put over the flame and the flame heats it up and then u use it just like an electric pencil iron

My duh, I thought the pic was 2 different ones, I see that you simply install whichever tip you want. I have terrible luck with electric irons. Last time I install a new tip and forgot about it and left it on all night,, lol.

It looks real good. Can anyone think of any flammable danger that would niot want to use the open flame? Nothing is flammable on li-pos? is it.

Well you do have to watch which direction you point the vent hole on the tip. Very hot air escapes from there that can melt electronics, heat shrink, whatever it accidently gets pointed at. In some lighting situations it looks like there's a flame coming out of the hole.

I looked on website and see no reference to extra fuel or refilling.

The site I linked to above, if you stay with the 120 Watt or below, you need no special fuel. It uses standard Butane for cig lighters. You can pick up a can at Wal-Mart for .99 cents, and get about 5 hours of run time with the iron on full blast.
