I have owned a lot of crappy electric R/c cars from like toys R us and stuff and i wanted to get into the faster stuff. i wanna know what kind of car should i start off with? I want a car that can break 40mph. If u can please post kind of car, price, max speed.

And what else do i need to buy to get started?
Last question is...How expensive is it to get a drifting r/c car that break 30-40mph?

Im mainly an off road rc'er, so take what I suggest with a grain of salt as Im not 100 % sure Id be correct.Anyway, from what I have read on drifters, because of the set up necessary for them...Im thinking you may be better off with two vehicles. Set one up for drifting and the other up for top speed and handling. From what I have read on drifting, top speed means nothing. The best electric drifters use at the hottest, a 17 turn motor. I believe most people suggest using a Roar "stock" 27 turn. Given all of that, I would suggest looking at the HPI Sprint or the Tamiya TL-01 series. Very inexpensive and I would guess, easy to set up for drifting. As for the top speed/ handling car, there's many options. The AE TC3 or 4, the Team Losi XXXS or the HPI Pro 4 are all excellent options and parts should be readily available at most shops or online if necessary.
With a mild "mod" motor ( ie, 14-17 turn ) and correct gearing, you can get an electric touring car to get the speeds that you are looking for, fairly easily. Support equipment...tires...especially hard rubber for drifting and lots of tires as you'll likely go through them quickly. Foams or softer rubber (Take-Off CS 27s are pretty popular) for a racer or top speed/handling car. You'll need a good radio and you'll want two receivers, one for each car. Several sets of battery packs would be good along with a charger. An extra motor might not be a bad thing. Stock motors usually run around $30 where mod motors can run $40-$60 or so. Being that you're probably not racing, you can get by well with the less expensive machine wound mods. Of course, you could ignore all that and look into a brushless system. Yet another option among the multitude.

Welcome! start here:http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=222400

i would recommend doing some HEAVY investigating on how ya wanna go... if ya want fast- http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNCA8**&P=0 roughly 70 mph out of the box with about $450 total investment. that should cure your need for speed, bolt some drift tires on it and hang on. Keep in mind tho, this is an extremely fast car, 70 mph is absolutely crazy, and it requires some expert driving and in my opinion, is not a beginner car, but that is solely up to you and your confidnece on your driving skills.

40mph with electric? your gonna spend some cash, a GOOD chassis, brushless set-up, $$$ batteries, ect. by no means am i trying to discourage you, just be prepared to spend some decent money to get what you want.
As LD3 stated, getting one car to go fast AND drift, might take more than one would think. I am by no means anywhere near qualified to tell you the best set-up as many many others on here are, so i will leave you with this: in MY opinion, think about what you will enjoy doing the MOST, then find the car that best suits THOSE needs.

hope this helps.

After seeing that u need a lot of maintenance for nitro i think i am ganna go with some thing a little less high maintenance. I'm thinking about a 350$ budget. so can you guys post a complete list of things i need to get started with a car. Ive decided to go with speed just to get started and go to drifting after i get a lil more $, and find a place to run it. My town sucks. No where to race or buy R/c cars. I'm thinking about a go-cart track prolly..lol
And is there any way to subscribe to a magazine WITH OUT a credit card? Im only 16 and dont have one and i rly want the magazine but not sure how. ive went to a cupple book stores around here and no1 has it.

thanks a lot guys

The maintenance factor will pretty much be the same for nitro or electricas far as the chassis's go.The one main difference though, is tuning an engine. There's lot's of info here and all over the thread, feel free to search for engine tuning threads. Electric motors aren't nearly as finicky...but they will need some semblance of maintenance. However, brushless is a totally different thing. From what I have read, they require very little maintenance.

Here's a couple threads that will likely help you for drifting info...

For that budget I would recommend getting an RTR to begin with.

Yokomo is world reknowned for their championship winning vehicles. Two cons about this though, it is a little more expensive than the others and it also comes with "friction" shocks. The RCer in me, Id rather have true silicone filled shocks. Pros- Yokomo quality, comes with a battery pack, fake brake discs for bling factor...all in all, Id choose one of the first three first. Then, you'll still have approx $100 to get some decent battery packs and maybe a set of drift specific tires or a good charger for the batteries.

ok... with that budget, we can get ya rollin!

now keep in mind, this is merely a SUGGESTION,,,.......many others are available, just trying to get ya bang-for-the-buck.

@ http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMCS8&P=0 find more info at http://www.hpiracing.com/index2.htm , cars and trucks, rc, electric on road....
At $241.00, this will get ya going pretty decent, now lets find ya a charger
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LG2932&P=1 theres your charger, $45.
as for batteries, i know there are many deal out there, so maybe shop around. grab a little "hotter" motor, ( that speed control will work with a 15 turn motor, which is decent for speed, pick up a few extra pinion gears, 2 teeth larger and smaller than stock, and enjoy!

I know you will ( or at least should) get many other responses to this, with different idea on cars, ect. and that is great, its also why we are all here. We want as many people as we can to enjoy this hobby, and want you to get the most out of what you have.

ok guys, i know there are A TON of you on-roaders who can get him off on the right track better than i can! $350 is our budget, 30 mph is our goal.

The above cars that I linked to are all electric...here's a few choices for nitro RTRs if you might be interested...

http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HPI10001

http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ASC2042

One last thing when looking at the links I posted...don't get too wrapped up in the body that comes with these. Let's say, you really like the HPI Subaru body, but you think you'd prefer a shaft driven style chassis like the TC4. You can get the TC4 RTR kit, beat the snot out of the stock body if you like, then you can buy the HPI body for around $20 or so and use it on the TC4.

and if i go a nitro car what will i need to buy to get started with that?

___rollin___

For a nitro Touring car it depends. Some only need fuel, some need a battery/charger to start the car. I think that it'd be better to start with a electric Touring car for the sheer fact of user friendliness. Plus, the nitro cars are very fast, and might be a little hard to get used to the speed without ramming into stuff.

A electric car will be also a little bit cheaper.

Nitro fuel can go anywhere from 20-30 dollars a gallon.

40mph may sound slow, but trust me, It's pretty fast. Especially for a beginner to "hobby grade" rc's.
