View Full Version : How many cells can a motor take?

OK, they make 6 cell packs, and 7 cell packs. If 7 cells are better, what about more?

Could you run 10, or 12 cells to a motor? Would it just melt, or would it be OK? If the ESC can handle it, can you put more cells in series to a motor?

A motor can handle many cells.........i have a car that is powered by 10 cells and dual modifieds!!

i guess its up to what the esc can handle because many cells add weight and could burn your esc

:D OK, I just got crazy. :D

I just put my super rooster in my rustler, with 10 cells. I have a 15T Speed gems, and the tires just about blow off the rims when holding it up in the air. I put it on the ground, and holy smokes what blazing speed!

My buddy at work pulled a sneak attack on me this week. He has a rustler also, and he got a Reedy Ti 11T and a 7 cell hump pack, installed it with his super rooster and blew my doors off.

Heh-heh, tomorrow at work he and everyone else will be annihalated! Nuclear sneak attack, heh-heh :D

Don't worry about what the motor can handle--after all, slot cars run on 12 volts, the equivalent of ten cells! Do be careful of your ESC though; most are designed for 6 or 7 cells, no more, and many have limits on how low a wind you can run. Check those specs!

Alright guys, this thing is total insanity, and that's just the way I like it! :D

OK, I know I need to watch temps, and yes they got hot. Here's the specs:

Super Rooster ESC - No Motor Limit - 10 cells max

Speed Gems 2 15T Quad motor, 30* timing

84TS; 20TP

Tamiya Motor Mount heat sink plate

10 cells of 3000mah NiMh batteries in series, about 13.71V fresh off the charger total voltage

Speed Hawgs lo-pro tires for a bit of gear reduction

Now, this thing is easily twice as fast as my buddy just did with his Ti 11 T and 7 cell!

I have the tires glued on the rims, but only had them glued in 4 spots inside and outside beads. That was not enough! The rear tires kept coming off the beads. As if that were not enough, the front tires came off the beads too!! I just kept popping them back on and going for it. :D

This thing is fast. Really fast. I can't wait to blow my buddies minds when they see this. I am going to have to re-glue all the tires really well. We have been having speed constests at work lately with our Rustlers and have all been doing little tweaks. This is going to be overkill! :D

Temps: after about 10 minutes of running, mostly high speed passes and braking up and down my street......

Motor: 229*F
Batts: 165*F
Speedo: 110*F

OK, all I need is about 3 minutes to make my point tomorrow, hahahahaha!!! (evil grin)

O P,
Can you post some pics on how you soldered the batteries together? Believe it or not I have never seen a 10cell pack built.

Ammo: I cut down a 6 cell pack, to 4 cells. I made a series harness to connect the two packs together, one 6 cell and one 4 cell. I have to stack them in the chassis and tie wrap them together. I will post pic's tonight after I get home from work.

Most motors are designed for no more than 8 cells. By running more you risk damaging the motor.

Ran it at work today. Everyone was blown away. "Mission Accomplished" :D

It was hard to control. The cement at work is much more slippery than the asphalt out in front of my house. The tires would just spin wildly and the car would do donuts if I hit full throttle from a standstill. I found I had to get a rolling start, and try hard to keep it going straight and slowly open it up to full speed. It's much easier to drive on my asphalt street, however. I might try different tires for work, to get better traction. I have some Gladiators and they seem to work OK on cement. The tires turn into skinny donuts at full speed!

Years ago I used to have a Novak 420-MXc; it could handle up to 20 cells, which I tried with an 11 turn double. Besides throwing the tires off the rims numerous times, it threw a winding off the motor after a few full-throttle passes  But when it was running (about 5 minutes)... HOLY CRAP! I didn't time it, but I would guess high 70's for speed. Besides the fact I had to put really stiff springs on the buggy and it handled like crap because the battery pack was a 4-layer hump pack (lol), but oh boy was it ever fast. Then it threw the winding. Oops. Neat while it lasted. It also went nearly through a set of brand new brushes in that one run.

I've had no problems with 10 cell packs though :D But, things do get toasty...

Want to see some real speed!! Get a brushless motor!! Now we talkin Fast!! Yup, way faster than the motor you and your friend are runing! You could pull 70+mph in a big, big, big parking lot!!!

From the FWIW Dept:

I hooked 10 cells up to a almost brand new 13 turn Reedy with no load. I was just goofing around with my 10 cell drag car pack.
Well the thing went zzzzzziiiiiieeeeeeeeing POP!

The thing went flying out of my hand. It took me 20 minutes and a hammer to get the arm out of the can. I threw a winding and it jammed between the arm and the can pretty dang hard.
Please learn from my mistake.

Id definitly go for different tires because those speed hawgs are really really thin and flimmsy go for a different road tire :)

i have a car that runs off 12 cells wiren in series....it's called an emaxx. A motor can handle alot of cells...the questions is how long will it take before the motor burns out.

jeepinator: I had a Speed Gems 15T fly out of my hand with a 6 cell pack. That's why they say to use only 4 cell packs when free holding them, LOL!

What's with all the gloom and doom warnings? I have run this thing last night and today at work, four full runs so far. So what if the motor melts? I'll just get another, it's all in fun and that's what the hobby is about, right?

Anyway, everything is holding up. Connectors are ok; motor is ok; wiring is ok. Maybe the only part suffering is the Speed Hawgs, LOL :D

Thanks for the information Old Phart. I agree, they make more motors everyday. :) I just can't afford to buy one everyday. :D

:D ok ok I no expert but I seen what these guys do at the insane speed runs the RC car action covers with 105 mph screamin electic RC car setting speed records almost every year. I seen a guy use over 12 cells in a car question is not. howmany cells can you handle mor like how many cell can speed controll handle cause that go before you I can almost guarentee it. tekin make some awsome speed controls for people who like placing extreme amount of cells in their the cars. I think tekin has ESC that can handle 24 cell if I am correct how ever you be paying good pretty penny trust me.
my question is can handle 10 - 12 or most extreme 24 cells which is senseless unless
want demostrate you are the fastest in whole country or city.

I think gonna do that to my truck now LOL hehehe

I have donna a insane setup since toying around with my classic graphite RC 10 team car whan I was 16  :p

my RS4 MT truck is already clocking around 60mph off a 6 cell 3000 nimah battery
and novak super rooster

just got to build my self custom ram air duct blast cool directly across the heat sink and also on to the motor. :D :D :D
easy task with cardoard then I laminate it :D
