Can this be used to clean electric motors? I've read that it can't, why not? I tried it on an old 540 just to see and it clean the dirt off, and it didn't seem to ruin the motor. What gives?

I guess you could use it to clean motors without harmfull effects, but I don't think it will be quite as effective as a legitimate motor cleaner at removing carbon build-up on the commutator. If it works however and you're happy with motor performance, I say go with it.

i use 100% synthetic oil such as Mobil1, Castrol GTX, and AmsOil. they work with ease and its something my dad already has so he gave me some to use. my P2K flies with it. but i thought WD40 was for just loosening stuff up so u can remove it or just lube it. so u probably could use it. i'd go with the 100% synthetic though. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

dont use it, it has oil in it and will leave an oil coating on your comm and brushes. NOt recomended. Also it could smell up somethign bad if you run the motor after its been sprayed.

Want cheap motor spray? I have been using "disk brake cleaner" From candaian tire for years now, comes in a larger can and the pressure is almost double that of "R/C BRAND MOTOR CLEANER".

Go to your local Napa or Automotive store and pick up some brake and electric motor spray. Its cheap and works like a charm. If you have a Napa around, it part number 4700.

The thing about WD-40 is that if not removed entirely (and it probably wont be inside the motor) is that it tends to attract dust and dirt in massive quantities. I used to use it to clean motorcycles, but stopped after I figured that it tended to make the clean up job the next time tougher. I would stay away from it.
