i paint on sign blanks that have been powder coated and i used urethane based paints as well on it and never had a problem if the clear that you put on top of it has uv inhibitors most do but check to make sure cheap clear in a can is a doulbe edged sword your never sure how its going to react to the paint your using and i've actually had it bleed all my colors together and mute it something terrible!
if you use a the clear thats designed for the paint your spraying... you shouldnt have much of a problem.

what kind of equipment do you have? if your just starting out and you have one project you could try the cans, i know a couple people use them here to back there bodys,
if you have a compressor and a gun to spray it with then id recomend any of the automotive clears, there a lil expensive but well worth there price...
theres also another alternative, go ask a local shop to see if they could hit it with some clear after there done with a project, maybe you might be able to trade some paint work for some clear work...
clear is a difficult paint to spray... actually the most difficult :o but with a little practice you should get the hang of it
i always recomend that people do test samples before they do the project just to make sure it wont wrinkle or delaminate
so what paint are you using?
whats your equipment?
that could give me a better idea of what you need you can also go to www.kustomkulturelounge.com they have many people on there that know far more than i do on clears and what to use

i'm looking for maybe a can of clear coat as it's just a few pieces i got that i gotta do and there pretty small as well, nothin real big. so a simple brand or what i should look for should get me in the right direction.

Powder coat is one of the most durable finishes ever. It's hard to chip with a hammer. If your just clearing it to protect it, the clear will be less durable than the power coat. I would just leave it be. Or, talk to the powder coat guy.

do you know if powder coat discolors down the line like after so many years? or fade? just curious. i was just planning to clear coat it to give it that more high wet glossy look but with what you said and it looking pretty fine as is. i think i'll go ahead and leave it as is.

From what I searched on google for you, it will not fade. It is probably your best bet to not clear over it since the clear will scratch before powder coat will.
