Press Release June 15, 2006
VP Racing Series #2
presents the
IMDRA West Coast Nationals
Hosted by SoCal MHRA
June 9 thru 11, 2006
The VP Racing Fuels Series # 2 contested at the Rialto Airport Speedway linked die-hard R/C drag racers from far and wide across the United States live, via web cam. An R/C drag racing first. Megatech International, Team Walbern and Fusion Motorsports received extensive coverage and exposure with Inside R/C by Anna Curtis and crew. Thanks to these folks for helping to make it all a success.
Arizona, California, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Utah were some of the states represented. It didn't take racers long to adapt to the California heat. Just days prior to the start of this event, it was a scorching 102 degrees! (Not to mention the temperature of 103 upon our Phoenix arrival) Many of the top “dawgs” came out to show how it's done. Once again with track conditions well above average, records would fall and the competition would be stiff in each class.
Competition began with Saturday night’s $250 Bracket Bash. Brian Jones went home happy after defeating an 18 car field. Sunday's Bracket honors went to the "Heckler" Oscar Smith. His win came with (self provided) sound effects for his electric 4.51 dial in door slammer. Talk about consistency!!! Troy Millard would collect one of his three R/U trophies in this class. Super Gas saw the return of Pat McDonald in record fashion. If I might add, Pat was one of the first, if not the first, to reach the 100 mph mark in R/C drag racing. He set both records and claimed TQ upon his return, 1.91 and 64.08 mph. A great R/U performance was turned in by Jim Schauer. And after a rough start to the weekend, Jason Lane claimed the B-side win.
Nitro Top Fuel would be the battle of the Kens. Ken Jones Sr. and Ken Key put on a wheel toting extravaganza. Both drivers wheel hopped track length, side by side with Ken Jones Sr. taking the win light. Another Ken, Ken Jones Jr., took TQ honors and had the lowest e.t. of the weekend @ 1.59. Glenn Hunnel was the B-side winner.
In Electric Top Fuel Rail, Jim Schauer would redeem himself getting TQ and 1st place hardware. Troy Millard collected R/U trophy # 2. The Top Fuel Funny class set the stage for Georgia's "Mr Nitro" Tim Morrow. Tim got the TQ spot, the win and both records, 1.879 and 73.16 mph. Not bad for the first time flier. Troy Millard was no slouch in this nitro vs. electric final, receiving his 3rd R/U trophy. Last, but not least, Extreme, put "Biohazard" Bill Poisso against understudy Mark Rollings in the finals. Bill didn't disappoint in this nail biter.
The IMDRA also thanks Mike Smith and the MHRA for hosting the event and Quarter Scale Motorsports for the 1/4 scale exhibition. Make preparations now as the countdown begins for the Litespeed "Texas R/C Drag" World Finals.
