Hi, recently purchased a Fantom (EPIC) 20-turn motor. Up until this point I'd only ever used rebuildable stock motors with fixed 24 degree timing. Stupidly, I pulled the Fantom motor apart without noting the setting of the timing on the can, and now I'm wondering where it should be set.
Any ideas ? What does changing the timing do anyway ?
FP.

Timing is set up in advanced and retard timing. I believe how it works is advanced timing will make your motor quicker, however hotter and will chew up time on your battery. Retard timing will slow you down however give you longer run times and your motor wont get hot as quickly. On the fantom motor, not sure, sorry. Hope I helped

Set it at "0" to start and advance or retard it one notch at a time to the speed you want for your car.

The effects on speed and battery that DJ Blender explained are correct.

It's a 20-turn single wound. I bought it for our Group 20 class, which is half-way between stock and modified - all motors must be 20 turn.

...oh and my batteries are stick packs either zapped 1700's or 2000's.

ok 0-10 degrees of advanced timing(not negative)should be a good point for your motor batt. combination...

Which do you turn the endbell? Clockwise or anti-clockwise? I am hoping to start G20 soon too. (the motors are 20x1 turns Krayzie) Hey Filthy, I'm from Australia too. Down at Melbourne. Is advancing the timing legal to do with those motors? Catch ya later

Oh yea, where and how much was your motor?

Hey Aussie_Man, from what I remember of the motor (it's at home on my workbench) you turn the endbell clockwise to retard, anti-cw to advance. There's a notch on the endbell and a series of graduations on the can. You simply loosen the screws, line up the notch with the graduation of your choice (either -, 0 or +) and tighten the screws. It's legal to change the timing in G20, they can't really enforce a fixed timing as there's no alignment key like there is on a rebuldable stock. And it's classed as a modified motor I guess, because the label on the can says "Fantom Modifieds".
I got the motor from Wings 'n' Things on Victoria Rd at Gladesville, $130. Pretty expensive but it had a "Legal in NSW, ROORDA approved Group 20" label on the pack, and that's what swayed me. Apart from the fact that none of the US online hobby places seem to sell anything other than lower turn mods or rebuildable stocks. Cop ya.

Oh man.. I blanked... I know that RCCA did a whole thing on the dynamics of advance and retard timing in their mag some months back. It was about 3 pages long talking bout how to do it, what got effected, what you replace afterwards and all that good stuff. I cant remember the month. Maybe Steve does...

You out there steve?
