I was just about to post some pics of my new Willys and saw Integra had beat me too it. This one is the best of the three he's painted for me. Pictures just don't tell the story though. Its much better in person. Its going on a Litespeed prototype direct drive chassis. Similar to the A-51 car that is unbeaten this year on the IMDRA circuit. Powered by a Novarossi 35 plus 21 modified by Litespeed also. They weigh 50 oz and have a 12 inch wheelbase. They run in the low 1.7 second range at 75+ mph. All that action in 132 ft. It will be in the World Finals in San Antonio this October along with the funny car and top fuel rail. Here is a pic of all my Rats resting in the shade :)

I should have those pics soon. Just waiting on my front clip and I'll have it all mounted up. Ordered some Dragon Plate carbon fiber for that rear deck. That is really going to look nice.

The rail in the picture has been a terror lately. Its been the fastest car in the top fuel class for a few weeks now. We have some guys that come up from Houston to race. Here is a shot of the rail last weekend on its way to another win.

If you are into dragsters and drag racing R/C style check out the clubs website at www.sadragracing.com. Now I'll get out of here and let Integra soak up some much deserved praise :)

These cars pack more bang for the buck than any I've found. I've raced 1/8 buggies MT's and on-road but there is nothing like having a car that will go from 0 to 80 in less than 2 seconds and look great doing it :). I finally got the body look I wanted with the car. Took me awhile but with an Integra body you don't want to screw up. So its lots of looking and a little snipping :)

http://image.rcuniverse.com/gallery/photos/197467/lg-57247.jpg

Now the rear wheel area is in proportion the wing isn't sticking up in the air and the body is low like its supposed to be. I just wish it was real so I could go cruise ;)

http://f5.putfile.com/6/17000261333.jpg

The actual race rear tires are taller and a little wider. These are hard tires I use to transport the car and when its not on the track. The softies we use will dent or flat spot if you leave the weight of the car supported on them. So you don't put those on until race time when the car is supported on the stand.

It certainly makes me want to hop in and punch the gas! Awesome job with the set up Griz, and Integra did an outstanding job to help with the look. ;)
I've been wanting to build one for a couple years now, but I have way too many on going projects to finish before I start another.

I was running off-road but my legs are messed up and it was getting hard to do the mains. I found out about the dragstrip in San Antonio Tx and took my Serpent 935R down there and got a 3rd place first time out. But I saw the top fuel rails that day and ordered one the next week. The Litespeed chassis is made in San Antonio. His new car the A-51 is the fastest thing out there with a run of 1.53 at the Atalanta Nats. I've seen it do 90.9 mph at our track. Only 132 ft of track to get it done too. Its amazing watching them run. The Pro Mod is the same engine tranny and rear plate as the rail with a short front end on it so they are really wild and not for a novice for sure. You don't see the car until it comes past the tree so if you can't set them up to come out straight all you hear is a loud thunk instead of your ride thundering down the track. Its all over faster than a gate drop at an off-road race :) Check out this short vid of my car putting one on the trailer. One of the guys comes up from Houston every two weeks. You can run any kind of car in bracket you should come on up sometime. Check our thread on www.rcfiles.com.

Don't get me started! I said I have other projects to finish! :p

I appreciate the info Griz. It's great to meet someone more or less local ( at least driving distance ) that's into this. I'll keep browsing the forum you posted and probably hit you up for more info in a few months if ya don't mind. ;)

Initially, I just wanted to build one for my own grins to add to my collection, but I just may dive deep into this.

Yes I bet you could hook up with the other guy and ride up with him. He's been looking for someone from Houston to go with. His handle is ahr43 on the www.rcfiles.com board. Thats were we all hang out. Got the 4th of July Shootout coming up 1st of July this year. Cash money for that race. That and the Labor Day dash for cash are the two big summer races. But Oct is the big one the World Finals. That gives you plenty of time to get a car together :)

I'll get some at the track soon. Then its time to send it to the mags and see if I can get another car in one of them. Since RCCA is an IMDRA sponsor I'll send this one to them first. The funny car was in Driver in the spring.

Possibly dumb question... how do you stop?

griz11
06-22-2006, 07:01 PM
The brakes are just like on a road car. Two calipers and a disk attached to the tranny shaft. The throttle servo works them just like in most other cars. I use Avid Indole disks and they stop it pretty quickly. I was using a dual disk before I got the Indoles but now I only have to use one disk. They don't weigh that much to its not too much of a problem stopping them. However there is a net at the top of the track just in case :) The track is almost 300 ft long so you have longer to stop than you did to accelerate. Minimum track size is about 250 feet and that is cutting it close. The electric guys have a lot more trouble getting whoa'd up than the nitro guys do. We also use anti-lock braking to keep from flat spotting the very soft slicks.

I've heard questions about drag cars that are a lot worse than how do you get them stopped. Like do they steer is probably the worst offender :) So fire away if you have questions about drag racing. I don't mind answering any questions no matter how 'dumb' they might sound.

Can I simply convert my car to a drag racer (Like I am, kind of, doing now. No, it is not a 4wd... anymore!) or I would be just trowing my time in the trash? Do they backfire or spit fire from the exhaust like the real ones (NoOB Question, sorry, but i had, realy had to ask, cuz is sooo damn cool!) How % nitro u guys run ? TAAAANK You!

Thanks again for the dispensation on that one. It was one of those ?'s that come outta the keyboard before you think too long. Being an avid drag racing fan, NHRA, IHRA, PRA and TxPRA, I was having a tough time getting my fat head around what it would take to haul down a missile like that. From the pix, it seemed like the shutdown area was a little tight.

In my limited experience w/ VW drag racing, the shutdown was always the hairiest part. Sounds like your cars aren't much more docile from that standpoint.

griz11
06-24-2006, 09:56 PM
Nothing wrong with converting a car. I had one myself before getting the purpose built cars. Depending on how you tune them they can spit and spotter. I've been experimenting with setting a button to idle mine up after staging also. I run 55% nitro in the Rail and Pro Mod 40% in the .12 in the funny car. Both Rail and Pro Mod have .21 engines. .12's don't like the 55% :) My rail uses a HPI RS4 caliper and I use an Avid indole disk. The indole or carbon disks work best hauling these things down. Getting rid of the shocks on a regular on-road car and putting in turnbuckles is a good thing to do if you are doing to drag race the car on a regular basis. Get rid of the big tank and go get a 1.5 or 2oz airplane tank and put in there. Anything you don't actually need to get it down the road get rid of. You will need to make sure the tweak is right if you go to a solid suspension set-up. Otherwise be prepared for some starting line action you won't like :)

Chassis? Maybe put some holes (more holes :) ) in it? What .12 are u using? Can you please post the specifications for it? All I did until now was trashing all the front wheel drive of my previous 4WD nitro RS4... Belts, everything. It is a lot lighter now. And more fun to drive! Also got rid of the heavier tuned pipe. Is my .12 CV up to the challenge (just to start) maybe running 33% in the beginning? I wanna get my hands into some wider rear tires and smaller front wheels/tires... OK, tanks for the help!

I have an OS .12 TR from my old 200mm days I'm going to run in the funny car once I get the chassis. I'm converting that car from an electric to a nitro. I sold all my electric stuff. Just doesn't do it for me. Yea you can lighten up the chassis but don't get too crazy. You don't want it to loose its stiffness. The biggest jump you will get is working with the clutch and getting the tune right. You can get a 'boat pipe' for your .12 that will give it a bit more punch. Kinda hard to get this kind of pipe out the back though. Sometimes you have to cut the body pretty radically. Also these pipes come in a long length that you have to trim off until you get the pipe the right length. TM has slicks for every kind of car pretty much. If you have hexes on your axles you can get some 'outlaw' foams 35mm wide at ashford hobbies. If you can convert to a 4 bolt hub you will have a much greater selection of tires. If you have access to a tire truing machine or mini lathe get some bowflex leg cushions for their exercise machines. You get a pair of them for around 5 bucks and it will make up 3 sets of rear slicks in the wide size we use in top fuel. Here is a pic of the funny car also painted by Integra.

And the rail on its pit stand. Another Integra scheme.

Nice! You inspired me! It's a shame that RC dragracing isn't more well known. :(

griz11

Yea but its getting bigger each year. The timing systems are expensive. I think that is the main reason there aren't more tracks. The other significant thing is traction compound. LC-6 or VHT is pretty expensive when you consider the amount put down for a good surface. 2-6 gallons is the norm. So putting on the races cost some bucks. There are some more inexpensive timing systems being developed so that will be one thing that might spur more racetracks. Actually any piece of parking lot 300 x 25 ft will do :) If you are running primarily bracket cars you can get by with 250 260 ft but its kinda tight getting the cars stopped in that distance. Hopefully it will be in your area soon. If not check the www.imdra.com page and see if a regional or national race is near enough to get to. Its a lot harder than it looks to get a car to the other end of the track with a good number. You have to be very smooth on the steering and quick on the response. You can't buy your way to the top. A 'slow' car 2.7 to 3.0 seconds is perfect for bracket racing. Check out the pictures at www.sadragracing.com and you will see off-road cars in the winners circle, purpose built dragsters and anything in between.

You can see the Dragonplate carbon fiber wing in this pic. Veneer on the endplates and a solid piece of the wood filled cf as the base of the wing. The stuff is kinda pricy but its sweet and easy to work with since it has a wood core. Lightweight also.

I took these the other day. The car is ready to run as soon as I buy another Nova 35 plus 21 for it. I'll switch out the motor from my rail to test it out while I save up the dough for the Nova. They are expensive but awesome. And my motor man has them figured out pretty much.

I submitted it for readers rides. Hope it gets in there. I spent a lot of time on this one. And so did Integra. He is doing another wing for me. Rat Ears this time :) Should be cool. I don't want to run the CF wing for racing its too heavy. The Rat Ears will be an all lexan wing. Nice and lite.

The bodies aren't really all that thin. About the same maybe a little thicker on the top as a off-road or on-road body.

We had an awesome turn out for our 4th of July Texas Shootout. 27 bracket cars 9 in Extreme and 6 in the 1.95 index class. Lots of nice dragsters. We had a couple of rain delays so the festivities didn't finish until almost 2am. It was a fine night of racing for sure.

This car continues to impress. November issue of Hot Rod magazine has it on page 38. Last month it was in R/C Driver mag. June found it in the agent 1320 section of dragracingonline.com and it was July R/C of the month on TRCZ. Taking it to the World Finals next week to see if I can bring home some hardware. It took a 2nd place its first race. Just happened to be a money race :)
