Best Paint Competition – May 2006
Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of February and will close at Midnight (EST) on Wednesday, May 31, 2006.
Restrictions: None. This is an open paint contest.
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.
Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Piggy89373 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
Desfjr1300 and LongRat will judge this month’s Amateur and Pro Classes (respectively).
Next months Best Paint Competition will have a 2 Paint restriction.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

This is my very first body I spraypainted based on the SCCA http://www.realtimerl.com TSX race car. I got nice compliments when I brought it to my first race and wanted to know where to buy it. You can get it from allspeed (http://www.allspeedhobbies.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_47_48_243&products_id=2255&osCsid=97b5c76479f3cfd979cc69045993b5d1) and Horizon Hobby (http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=YOKRS26) . It's thinner than a protoform body, but held with no cracks in a novice race, aka demolition derby, flying and crashing dozens of times with a road rail track. I came in 5th out of 8. Need more practice! :p

First body I've ever painted. I had a lot of fun painting it. Now I can't wait to paint my next one. I used an old Passche Type H single action airbrush I picked up a a garage sale for $10. I opted for no decals because I thought it would mess up the flow of the paint. I incorporated the Bear paw that I sketched and use for any of my personal projects. I backed the whole project with the Buff color and it seemed to work out well. Let me know what you guys think.

I have a vinyl lettering shop and I wanted to try marbled effect so I gave it a shot. I used low tack vinyl, I didn't have any mask vinyl. It worked good but I will get mask for the next one. PM me if you have some ideas you would like cut and I'll see what I can do for ya.
BTW here's one with the wing mounted.

Sparx, looks good! Looks like it's one of Tamiya's older style schemes! Maybe their new one I don't know I don't follow onroad much anymore...
Surikarn ran the same scheme with different colors when winning his first WC in South Africa, so your right about Tamiya ;)

Devius that's a nice mini shell, and thanks for the compliment. If it were bigger i could get the shading and stuff nice but at that size forget it.

Hmm .. I only had that problem on the first body i used it on .. I wash then out (body) I use a scotch brite pad(grey not red .. red is to harsh)to scuff the body and then liquid mask ..
but since that first one I haven't had a problem unlesss you fold the body into two
but yes it's meant for lexan
I'm starting to use some waterbased stuff but not much .. I don't like the way it softens up the mask

First off, thanks to everybody that took the time and made the effort to enter this month's contest-while the number of entries makes judging tough, I'd rather we had too many than too few, and hopefully this will be the beginning of a trend.
Please keep in mind that I am in no way a professional art critic, and every one of you are far more talented than I could ever hope to be-so cut me some slack if you don't agree with my choices :D
Ok, here we go, in order of entry (with the exception of the top 3):
Fester: Hess Truck
Design: 7
Execution: 5
Difficulty: 4
Total : 16+1
I had to look this one up, and sure enuff, there's such a thing as a company called Hess. You got all the colors right for a very accurate replica, and if it wasn't for the squiggly lines where two colors meet it would have scored higher. (I know how tough it is to mask a straight line on a curve!) Fester gets an extra point because he's one of the few on this forum who consistently displays a positive attitude, and I wanted to thank him for continuing to encourage all of us.
HPI Freak : Orange ST
Design: 8
Execution: 7
Difficulty: 5
Total: 20
Really like this one-the white rollbar and window trim set's it off from the rest and makes what might otherwise be a sort of ho-hum paintjob stand out. The flames look a bit "stunted" to my eyes although the execution was good, and I really like the rolled down window. Sharper lines on the window trim would have scored higher, but overall it's a very sweet ride.
Bunsincunsin: Mazda 6
Design: 6
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 4
Total: 18
Maybe it's because of the pic size, but as far as I can tell all the lines are straight and bleed-free, so while it may be a fairly simple scheme you did well with the execution. The style's different enough to be appealing and if you were going for the drifter look I think you nailed it!
Tygerdan: Rayspeed Accord
Design: 7
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 4
Total: 19
Excellent job on your first body! Looks like the real deal, paint lines look good and decal placement looks great too. The difficulty prevents a higher score but you did very well against some stiff competition. I hope you've got one up your sleeve for next month's 2-color contest!
RC Hoodlum: Nissan Titan
Design: 7
Execution: 5
Difficulty: 4
Total: 16
I had a tough time with this one. On the one hand I really like the mottled effect, but the lack of any grill detail and the bleed on the black outline is a bit distracting. The green mixed with the blue looks awesome and I really wanted to score this higher, but I gotta stick to the rules! I think you're on to something though and I'm looking forward to seeing your next creation.

I happen to love that body so it was hard to not just give you a perfect score and be done with it, but.....you've got some tough competition this month! Anyway you can't beat the classic yellow and black combination and I know what a PITA it is to mask rollbars but you handled it very well with only the tiniest bit of bleed. While the goofy dude on the hood is not exactly my cup of tea, for only your second body you did a great job!

It's hard to find any flaw at all with your entry-the design and execution look killer, and as far as difficulty there's no way I could duplicate that in a million years. I hope that's your "shelf queen" body 'cuz I'd sure hate to see it get trashed! This would have been my pick for best paint this month but you just barely got edged out....you'll just have to scroll down and see by whom!

This is another one I had a really hard time with. The way the checkers look recessed gives it real depth and the design is just incredible. You are seriously talented and I think if you had given the rear end the same treatment as the front you'd have made picking a winner dang near impossible.

I never thought tan could look good on an r/c, but that just goes to show what a rank amateur I am. You had to have spent a long time masking that bad boy because every edge on every color is perfect! Very unique, and an awesome departure from your cookie-cutter military camo hummer. Great job!

Cnroman, I've seen what you can do with templates so I know you're quite the artist, but give us a better picture next time! I think the design is very cool but it's hard to tell how well it came out, but I'm partial to old hotrods so I guess I can't give you TOO much of a hard time

Being a bike nut myself I really wanted to score this one higher. Orange and black gives it that classic HD "feel" and the carbon fiber look turned out pretty good. Gotta give you credit for fashioning it out of an empty soda bottle, although that 2nd pic makes it look like the fastest ladybug on the planet!

Nice looking ride and you did an awesome job on the rollbar.( I keep mentioning this because for me they're hard to get right!) I don't know if it's the lighting or what but that is a very unique shade of yellow. The paint lines are very sharp and the colors go well together. The only "improvement" I can think of, and take this with a grain of salt, is that the flames on the side look a bit last minute-maybe if they were a bit higher on the body?

Welcome to the forums! It's almost cheating to enter a Tamiya body, you know. ;) I'm sure you're thinking "What! Only a 7?" for difficulty after you've spent a third of your life cutting out and applying all those decals, but that's only 3 away from perfect! Anyway, that is an awesome looking body and the paint lines look sharp and crisp. The color combination is great too and if you weren't faced with some serious opposition you may have come out on top!

I really like this one. You nailed the "old skool" look and created one of the coolest looking mini's ever. In this case simple really is better, as any more design would have detracted from the overall look, unfortunately difficulty counts! Either way it's just plain mean looking and I'm going to shamelessly copy it on my next mini body!

As your entry was your 666th post I was tempted to give you first place to avoid eternal damnation, but since I'm probably doomed anyway I'll just stick to the rules. :D
This is another one I really like. The yellow to orange fade on the front looks perfect to me and the only thing that prevents a higher score is that the black shading on the white sections is a little uneven-otherwise that is one sweet body and you did an awesome job hand cutting the flames. Gorgeous shade of blue-I'm going to have to try those Auto Air paints.
Ok, we're finally at the top 3:

I'm sure I'll get grief over this but to my eyes that thing is just too cool. The design may be simple but fits that body style perfectly and those colors together are be-you-te-full. The big chrome "O" really stands out and ties everything together. Awesome job Paul! Can I have it?

No offense to the winner, but this is my favorite, hands down. The design is relatively simple but so very unique and eye catching. I'm not a big Homer fan but you gotta admit Mat Groening would be proud. As I said at the beginning I'm no art critic, so I can't describe exactly what it is that makes this thing "pop" for me, but it does. I'm always on the lookout for something different and this is it. The execution was flawless and those simple colors really work well together. Kudos to you Cesar, amazing work!

I think we've got a ringer here. If that's amateur class work then I'm John Wayne's great aunt Suzie. Buggy, that is one outstanding piece of work! I can't believe it didn't take you years to do all that masking. The fade front to back is incredible, all the lines are sharp, amazingly enough those colors DO work together, and it looks like so much is going on a simple once-over isn't enough to take it all in. I can't even begin to imagine how hard that must have been! No more amateur class for you, mister. Time to play with the big boys!
Congratulations!

I really hate it when stuff like this happens. But, it's now midnight, I have to work tomorrow, and I've finished the judging. For the pros, I expect more from them in a competition than just a rush job for a cheap customer. Here's where you showcase your abilities, not your exhibitions of rushed jobs. So, put on your thick skins and enjoy.
Hirme
Protoform Mazda 6
Design: 7
Detail: 6
Execution: 6
Comments: It’s a nice design and flows relatively well. The shadows are too heavy and clumpy. The fade between the yellow and the orange isn’t bad, but it’s a bit too stark. I would have liked to have seen more with the large blue area.
Reynolds716
CRT Proline Crowd Pleaser
JPConcepts 1/8th body
Design: 7
Detail: 7
Execution: 7
Comments: I grouped them together since they’re the same paint job. However, I like the way the sun works on the buggy body better than the truck. I would like to have seen some detail in the checkered flag to give it some depth. Also, some shadows on the front flames would have been good. The rips need some work and some properly placed shadows and highlights.
Ghosty
Unknown truggy
Design: 6
Detail: 7
Execution: 7
Comments: It might have more detail, but you can’t tell from the slightly blurry cell phone camera pics. The orange swooshy pointy things look good. I would like to see some pinstripes with good contrast to really set them off. The white streaks into the blue look ok, but lack definition. Some clearer pics would have scored this one higher. Some drop shadows would have made things stand out better. Next time, be sure to put in all the required information, your newness allowed this one to slide…this time.
Ajsilva
Stratus and Mazda 6
Design: 8
Detail: 7
Execution: 7
Comments: Since they’re both the same paint job and I see they’re done almost exactly alike in all details, I’ve grouped them together. I had to look had at this to see some faults. The flames look good, but some look out of proportion and lumpy. Your drop shadows need some definition instead of looking like a fuzzy outline. The flags look great and have nice shadows to bring out the realism. The large blue area is nicely broken up so as to not look so dominating.
Airboston
Red and Yellow Por-shuh
Design: 7
Detail: 7
Execution: 8
Comments: It has a nice flow to it, but is rather bland from what you normally do. The trick here lies in it’s deceptive simplicity. The chrome trim is flawless. The red pinstripes on the rear look a bit uneven, but it could be the camera angle. The script is perfect. For me, there’s just not enough there to score you higher.
Airboston
Carson Porsche
Design: 8
Detail: 8
Execution: 7
Comments: Although I’m not a big Nagel fan, nor am I a Duran Duran fan, it’s till a good looking paint job. The detail in the faces is exceptional, but the proportion seems a touch off. I’m not sure if it’s from the original or scaling. The trim looks great, as does the top. Something on the sides may have rounded this job a bit more.
Ajsilva
Stratus 3.1 Protoform
Design: 8
Detail: 7
Execution: 7
Comments: The leaves are a great idea to break away from the traditional paint jobs. However, the contrast around the veins of the leaves and the dark yellow is just too stark for me. Feather them out some and show off your airbrush skills instead of your masking skill. The little guy on the side is a good touch with nice bits of detail. Your masking of curves needs a bit of refinement.
Blacktiger
Mayhem Agitator
Design: 8
Detail: 8
Execution: 7
Comments: Clay, you’re really growing in your skills. The lighter and darker streaks really bring out some great depth. The shadows are nicely done and not overbearing. This is a simple enough of a paint scheme, but done very well. I would like to see a touch more on this to really bring things out. Another graphic or two (such as some script) would have iced this cake.
RespirologyRC
Crowd Pleazer 2.0 (green camo)
Design: 6
Detail: 6
Execution: 6
Comments: It’s….different. It’s like “***** Eye for the Straight Guy” went to boot camp. The dark streaks on the front look really blotchy. Better dagger strokes would have suited this better. Practice the dagger strokes.
RespirologyRC
Crowd Pleazer 2.0 (blue camo)
Design: 6
Detail: 6
Execution: 6
Comments: It’s….different, too. It’s like “***** Eye for the Straight Guy” redesigned urban camouflage. Once again, your dagger strokes are kicking you. The pinstripes blend in too much.
RespirologyRC
Crowd Pleazer 2.0 (blue camo)
Design: 6
Detail: 6
Execution: 6
Comments: It’s….different, too. It’s like “***** Eye for the Straight Guy” are in their fall camouflage pattern. The added graphic on the sides looks good. See above comments for dagger strokes.
Romuald31
Hobao GPX4 Pro
Design: 8
Detail: 8
Execution: 8
Comments: I like this body. There is some great detail and the colors flow pretty well. Nice headlights as well. The added detail in the KARO is a nice touch. More pictures would have brought your score up a bit more (would have let me see more detail).
Mes
Proline Crowd Pleazer
Design: 7
Detail: 6
Execution: 6
Comments: Interesting design. The ghosting on the front looks good. The design flows..somewhere, but at least it flows. I’m not much for the camouflage background. This is another obvious exercise in masking, but not too much more. I’ll withhold the “***** Eye for the Straight Guy” comments.
Mel
Crowd Pleazer 2.0 for LST
Design: 8
Detail: 7
Execution: 7
Comments: Only a real man can run a pink body. The design looks great, has good symmetry and nice little touches. I would have liked more on the hood instead of bright pink with the occasional light star mixed in. Some shadows would look great. You’ve come a long way from the old GT forum.
Sparx
Protoform Stratus 3.1
Design: 7
Detail: 7
Execution: 7
Comments: It’s a nice looking design, but not at the level I’m used to seeing from you. The colors flow fairly well, but the shadows are a touch heavy handed. The headlights look like an afterthought because of their design and lack of an actual light.
Stalker911
Proline F350
Design: 5
Detail: 5
Execution: 5
Comments: Hmm...where to begin. The flag on the back looks like something from a stigmatism test. It lacks depth and realism. Look at real pictures of flags and you won’t see the harsh black lines crisscrossing across it. The skulls lack depth and are done right out of the Artool Template. Add in some freehand touches in various colors to really bring things out. The ghoulie face looks like an afterthought. The brown wavy lines are too stark to blend in and provide depth. The celtic flames look ok, a bit drab, but nice shape. Lastly, your shadows are too dark.
Aluma
Chevy Silverado Proline
Design: 8
Detail: 6
Execution: 7
Comments: Nice looking design. It flows nicely, but lacks the usual Aluma flare for detail. It’s a great racing design, but artistically, it’s rather flat.
Aluma
Savage Stocker
Design: 7
Detail: 7
Execution: 7
Comments: Nice design. The variance in color brings out the design. However, the dark and steady color (purple-maroon) makes it look a touch flat. Use a slightly lighter tone to bring out the contours more and work the flow of the body as well as the flow of the paint job.
Aluma
Dodge Ram…something
Design: 7
Detail: 7
Execution: 7
Comments: Extra props for the double pinstripes. It’s a nice looking design, but the large red space could use a nice snappy graphic.
Mel
GM Proline
Design: 8
Detail: 9
Execution: 8
Comments: Great design!! I like the added touches here and there of a lighter color to bring out a nice flow. Your pinstripes are great. The shadows don’t look quite right. They don’t look bad, but they look a touch off on the sides. The shadows and darks spots on the hood look greath, though.
Stalker911
Proline Crowd Pleazer 2.0 for Jammin X1
Design: 5
Detail: 5
Execution: 5
Comments: The marbling looks good. The orange doesn’t look bad, but it looks like it should be separating more than to very similar colors. The panel lines look ok, but not quite right. The flag is hard on the eyes and looks more faded than 3D.
Billy W
RSP PM68
Design: 7
Detail: 7
Execution: 7
Comments: I like the flames for this style of body. The pink rivets in the rear look out of place. I’d like to see a larger pic of this and from multiple angles. For this type of body, I keep expecting more graphics on the side.
CharlieB
Protoform Mazda 6
Design: 8
Detail: 9
Execution: 9
Comments: I like the layered design of this and the colors look good. The bright green cracks are a bit tough to figure out. You are the king of drop shadows and layering. The cracks hosed you on the design score.
CharlieB
Protoform Kyosho Truggy
Design: 8
Detail: 8
Execution: 9
Comments: Nice flow, but looks a bit busier than your normal work. I can’t figure out the spider theme, though. It’s flat appearance doesn’t fit in with the rest of the body. It’s still a beautiful piece of work, but not the usual depth I see from you.
CharlieB
Protoform Kyosho 777
Design: 8.9
Detail: 9
Execution: 9
Comments: The face looks better than your rendering. It doesn’t look like the brass impression your rendering is, though. It’s rather frightening in it looks like a computer 3D rendering. The single graphic looks great. I expected a bit more though, other than the dark smudges on the rest of the body. BTW, try to avoid wearing a white t-shirt when taking pictures of a shiny t-shirt. :D
And the winner:
Mes
Zest
Design: 9
Detail: 9
Execution: 9
Comments: Way to think outside the box!!! It’s an exercise in optical illusions, but looks great. I like the added streaks, it really brings things out. Great use of freehand shields to sharpen up some of the streaks. Some shadows are a touch heavy, but not enough to detract from the overall look. Fantastic work!!
This was a tough contest to judge. Mes, you pulled it out for thinking out of the box (and in the shower) and attention to detail throughout the whole body. Very well done and a most deserved congratulations!!

Thanks Piggy for the win
There's nothing to thank me for. You're the one with the vision who made it happen. Step up into the limelight and enjoy the accolades!! You beat some really tough competition and some big name painters!! Congratulations!!
All of the competitiors deserve recognition. It's hard enough to paint, it's harder still to have a stranger (and sometimes peer) judge your work against other peers and put it on public display. Great job, everyone.
For the record, I'm really tired of judges skipping out on their duty. The only disservice they're doing is to their fellow painters. I don't want anyone's thanks or sympathy, and I don't want to hear reasons or excuses, I just want people to perform the functions they agreed to. Lecture is over, and thank you again to all who entered. I'll post up the next competition soon.

It's a pretty crumby thing to do; to skip out on judging. I wonder if their isn't a way to repremand them. I also wonder if there shouldn't be a BIG BOLD announcement to make sure all those who enter a comp, know they will judge the next if they win.
