if it is the TEU101BK by Tamiya, then yes it does have reverse!
if its a teu 101 you get brakes as well
How do you the brakes work?

My son's TT01 (04 Raybrig) kit came with a ESC with reverse. It handles the motor that came with the kit quite well and he has not had any trouble with it. When he is ready to step up to a hotter motor, I will probably chip in with him for a better ESC tho. I think this is one of the best cars for "newbies" to get introduced to RC. It is fairly inexpensive and can be upgraded as skills get upgraded. Anyway, best of luck to your friend with his new ride.

When you push up (forward) on the pistol radio trigger, the ESC will brake. Then when you release to neutral and push up/forward again, the car will go in reverse.
The stock ESC is good with the stock silver can mabuchi-type motor (or the sport-tuned black can), but tended to thermal on me with a "hotter" motor (no pun intended). My TT-01D came stock with the black can "sport-tuned" motor and I put in an Orion Core Stock motor, but the TEU101BK, would thermal just about every other run (even with the motor heat sink and gearing to compensate for the torque of the Core Stock), so I went back to the stock black can motor. I have it for bashing/drifting anyways, so it's no biggie to me to go back to the Sport-Tuned 540.
I think the TEU101BK is rated down to 23 turns, so it's *supposed* to be able to handle the Core Stock, but it's no big deal to me to be running the black can 540, since I get more runtime and less maintenance with the kit's stock motor. :)
