View Full Version : Green goop on battery bars

Been a bit slack recently. I hadn't had a good session of R/C for ages, so over Easter I decided to rectify that.

I pulled out my XXX-T and my Fantom 3000 side-by-side packs. I put one on the charger to charge and then noticed the green goop on the bars connecting the cells. I checked the other 5 packs, and to varying degrees, they were all the same. The batteries themselves don't look too bad. I charges three packs and they seemed to run ok, although by the time i ran the last pack I think the comm on the motor was getting decidedly average - the truck only ran at half speed for about 1 minute before I stopped.

So, I've heard about the action of batteries where the green stuff creeps from the negative terminal along the wire. I've seen it on stick packs and other batteries where the wire to the negative terminal is all but corroded away. My battery bars still look ok, and the green stuff can be cleaned off, but I'm just wondering - are my batteries ruined or still ok? (or on the way out). Is there anything I can do to ressurect them? Six new sets of matched cells is going to cost me my first born male child, so I'd rather try save these ones first (and so would he).

A few charge/discharge cycles? Desolder, and resolder with new bars?

Any info much appreciated,

Cheers,

FP

yr battery is leaking acid. Wash your hands, and buy a new battery pack. Be carefull with yr eyes.

The batteries aren't leaking at all. Just the green stuff creeping along the bars. It is a known phenomenon but I can't find the information I once read about it.

Anyone else?

your batteries are starting to leak an oxidizing the bars which turns them green.. Time for some new ones.. A simply way to check is check the voltage on each cell an see if you have a dead cell in the pack..

It's a normal chemical reaction, happens with automobile batteries too, that why you have to clean the terminals periodically. For rc use it can cause improper contact it you use connectors that can also corride. If it is not causing any electrical problems then it's normal, if it does interpute electrical current flow then replace the battery bars and connectors if needed.

Two things are happened that causes the green substance one in called electro - something, which comes from two different metals making contact copper (which most battery bars are made - with a silver or gold plating, plus zine of tin that battery casing is made from).
