As for how often, it kinda varies with use & the motor's setup. Some brushes can wear the comm faster than others, & heavier springs have the same effect. As a general guideline(with the most powerful setups), I'd say it's best to rebuild the motor every 6-8 runs, after that, the motor's performance will drop off quite a bit & the wear on the comm will accelerate. Further, those of us who want the absolute best out of them(& who don't care about the cost) will do it about every 4 or 5 runs or so(basically every raceday), to keep the motor at its very best & even to keep comm wear to a minimum. It really does last longer when you retrue the comm more often, because you don't have to remove as much comm material each time than if you wait a lot longer between rebuilds..... :)

If motor performance is declining it is probably time for a rebuild. Most rebuilds consist of cleaning the motor inside and out. Replacing brushes and having the comm trued. If you don't have a comm lathe check your LHS and ask if they do. Many LHS's will have this equipment and will be glad to true the comm for you for a small fee. Brush springs may also need to be replaced.

And if the motor is in really bad shape the armature may need to be replace, but in that case I would just buy a new motor.
