I asked Pete , he said the truck just missed him .
During the origional jump truck shoot for the March 99 issue I wasn ' t so lucky . A group of people gathered to watch me jump my Stampede . As I was about to take off for a jump , a father and son decided they were going to cross the track . Pete yelled to me to stop the jump . I quickly cranked the wheel to avoid the father and son and wound up jumping full throttle directly at myself . The truck hit me full blast in the chest and knocked the wind out of me and totally shattered the body of the truck .
Be carefull when you jump your vehicles .

OK guys , this is Pete . Derek called me over for this one -- I ' ve gotta make time to get on the board ! Anyway , I can assure you that I sat in the path of that truck for those shots . If you look at my shadow and the truck ' s , you ' ll see that it would hit me if it were lower . It is a little off - center , but it is definitely coming for me ! There is some " fiction " involved though -- I ' m not driving ! I drove for a few shots , but more often than not I wound up jumping the truck off to the side instead of directly towards me , because I couldn ' t see the truck when it dissapeared behind the face of the jump as it approached me . After a few bad shots , I had Kevin drive while a held another transmitter . Kevin was also driving for the wagon shots , including the one where I ' m lying on top of it (" Starting Line "). Kevin wasn ' t too psyched about it ; he kept saying " What if I hit you ?" I had to reassure him there was plenty of head room . I trusted my noggin to Kevin ... now THAT ' S scary .

Yes it ' s true , I was driving . I didn ' t want to hit Pete . Once I cleared him without a problem , it was hard to stop jumping !

that was a great article ! i also got hit my truck on a crazy jump . my frind was jumping his t - maxx at full speed , and we were competing to see who could jump his farther ( mine was broken at the time ) and while he was driving it , i was behind the jump , marking where he landed . well , i was watching his dad driva his rc10gt , when my friand hhit the jump a little crooked , and came right at me , i saw it at the last secondm right when it nailed my in the chest . it scared the bejeezus out of me , and when it hit me , he gunned it , and left a big fat muddy tire mark on my shirt , then it fell right on the wheels , and he drove off . him and his dad couldnt stop laughin and rambling about getting it on film and winning 10 , 000 on that funny video show , but i was pretty mad . oh well . i guess it was pretty funny now that i tihnk about it .
while a am waiting for my picco engie to com , i am in the process of making my own killer jump for my maxx . i am going to jump it at full speed , and see if i can get 50 ft . that is my goal . i dont know if its possible , but at least i just bought enough spare parts to practically build a new truck ! should be interesting .

Since we are talking about jumping trucks , I have a Stampede and I jumped over two of my friends , I measured where it landed , and it jumped over 15 feet !! When I tried it again after I made the jump bigger , I busted the shock wide open ! I fixed it in a couple of minutes by getting another shock , and I was back to jumping . I think the Stampede is a great truck . It is a very tuff truck . Since I had the Stampede , that was the only problem I have had so far . Great truck .

gregV , question . how ' d u guys make that jump , the one with the station wagon ( august ). it looks like u slaped some piesces of wood together in about 10 secounds and then ramped perfect landings ? wasup with that ? when i put a simple ramp like that together i always land on the top of the truck or somthin still following those rules in the issue . all i ' m sayin is did u messure that plywood jump and calculate at which speed u were to land or somthin ?

the jump article ...... shouldn ' t it have been re - named " hop ups for jumping trucks "?????
come on guys ... if you have a jumping article , have more jump pics ... sure , all the hop - ups were cool and all ... but there were really only 3 good pics of some high flying action ....
if you want some good idea ' s on some insane jumping .... go to your local motorcycle dealership and buy " Crusty Demons of Dirt "....
i mean , for real guys , you have a lot of resources there at your mag ( compared to us anyways .. LOL ).... if your gonna do a big article that makes the COVER .... then go big with it !!! don ' t skimp out with 95 % of it just being hop ups ...... it read like one big advertisement to me ..... i hate to rag on your mag .... overall , RCCA is head and shoulders above your competitors .... and above 90 % of the rags in motocross that i read monthly ..... ( RacerX , Motocross Action , Dirt Rider , ect ect ect ...)

pa_racer - I was in Japan when the guys went out to jump the trucks . From what they told me all they did was exactly what you explained . Found some wood and slapped a jump together . What type of vehicle are you trying to jump ? Kevin ' s 1 / 8 car is very fast , that ' s why it can jump so far . As far as keeping it level , all he does is use the throttle to adjust the cars attitude as we expalined . Remember practice makes perfect .
FLYBOY7 and Pardigm - Honestly I would have like to see more jump shots too , but that ' s not what the article was all about . It was intended to give readers ideas on how to beef - up their own vehicles to hold up to high flying action and how to drive jump vehicles . Although more pics might have been cool we would have had to pull some valuable information out to put in more pics . Depending on the response we get and so far it ' s been great , we ' ll probably do something like this again and we ' ll keep your posts in mind .

I think it was a well put together article , sure it good of had more jump pics , but you ' d be suprised on how many people have no idea how or what they need to jump their trucks .
Oh and guys , that was a Maximum ST you used not an MT , the MT $ ucks ( my friend had one for a month then returned it . Piece of junk )
Keep up the good work !!!

GregV - I would first like to say that it is absolutely outstanding that the staff at RCCA responds to posts and give their honest opinions . It gives RCCA so much more depth and definitely affected my decision to subscribe to your magazine .
I feel that my first post about the ' BIG AIR ' article was a bit ambiguous . Pictures are exciting and great eye candy but , I agree , they take up valuable space . The only thing really missing from the article ( besides lots of great pictures http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/wink.gif) was the details on how the cars performed . I would at least have had a paragraph or two describing each cars performance and parts on each that might pose a problem while jumping .
At most I would have made ' WHAT JUMPS BEST ?' and ' BEEFING UP for BIG AIR ' the bulk of the article and summarized the parts used in each car . Why go into detail on the parts of just four cars ? Unless this is going to be a normal secion of RCCA and most of the other cars / trucks out there are going to be included , the focus should have been on jumping in general . Four pages out of five were spent on listing the parts used on a handful of cars rather than going into more depth on how to get OUR cars to jump insaine distances . We didn ' t even get to see how all those nifty parts you guys added worked in the end !
Considering how good the odds are that a reader won ' t own one of these cars , I believe the four pages would have been much more valuable if they were filled with more information for cars in general or maybe even the pictures of your jumps so we would at least know how each car did in the end .
Just my 2 cents ,
- David R .

Dave R had a great point there ... the one about you could have at least written more about how the truck drove , handled , and JUMPED after all those mods ...
He had another good idea on a monthly JUMP section !! Take one truck , hop it up to the max , and show at least 2 pics of it getting major air .. and the pics have to show the take - off and landing points , just to give you a good idea of just how big that truck can go .... in your last jump article most of the pics were of the trucks floating through the air ... it didn ' t show take - off or landing points ... so you could have just tossed the car up in the air with your hand and shot the pic .... i know you guys didnt ... but big air shots require a perspective to show just how big they are going .....
just my 1 . 99 cents worth .... LOL http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

To everyone who posted - I printed this topic and pinned it to my bulletin board in my office . All of you have great ideas and we will do our best to incorporate as much of them as we can in future articles .
As for the performance of the trucks , obviously we can ' t add more in the article now , but I can tell you they all jumped great and we didn ' t break a part during the photo shoot . I can ' t give you a road course handling report because all we did was jump them .
We were hopeing that readers got a general idea of what parts might need to replaced for increased durability by the examples we gave . In reading the text we spoke about changing shocks , hub carriers , doubling chassis ' and other upgrades . These hop - up ideas can be applied to all vehicles .

Greg,
I read teh article you did on the USA-1 "Double Trouble", and had to make my decision...do that to my T-MAXX or do it to a new Nitro MT. Since the T-MAXX has so many aluminum parts available for it, it was the obvious choice. Get ready, 'cause it's gonna be bad!!!

I have my Ofna on my table now waiting for me to get enuf ambition to fix it. I was jumping it, about 1/4 throttle off of a home made jump that is about a foot off the ground and was getting about 7 feet of air and landing good and flat. Every now and again i would get a crooked jump and land screwy. So far, ive only lost a tire, screwed the wing, bent both front and rear shock towers(the worst) and lost my pipe. It was a mad dash to plug the carb when i lost the pipe, i thought my car had gone full throttle cuz of the loudness. mad funny though.
