Is brake clean OK to use to clean an elecric motor? I had a friend that used it all the time, but he only used chesp motors.

I would say no.. maybe other people think differently... but i have used brake parts cleaner on my RC before, and had nothing but bad results. It made my body brittle ( litterally SHATTERED) and left a residue on most parts.. I would never use it again personally..

i use brake cleaner to clean up my shocks
after i rebuild them and to clean bearings.
there are two different types. if you get
the wrong one you will know immediately
because the plastic parts will melt.
i suggest spray the brake cleaner on some
old parts and see what happens.
as for my motors, i only use motor spray..

Yeah, the problem(potentailly) with using brake parts cleaner is that a number of the versions of it has very high concentrations of some of the same chemicals that motor sprays use(more than motor spray), & in high enough amounts, will tend to eat through plastic, including the laminations on the motor armature's wires. When that happens, the arm will short circuit, & the motor burns up. For certain things(like cleaning your shocks, for example), it's ok to use brake cleaner, but you really should keep some motor spray for the motor & anything made of plastic(though the molded parts on many chassis should stand up to it ok).... :)

If you are looking to a cheaper alternative to the motor spray, the same company that makes brake cleaner also makes an electrical contact cleaner. I use that all the time. If you are lucky you can get some at a Wal-Mart. If not, an auto parts store should have it.

Napa part# 4700 brake and electric motor cleaner is very close to the same as RC motor spray and that would be the only thing I would use if your not going to buy the RC brand.
