Need a light? You can light something with my RC car. :) Anyway, everything is getting hot, ESC, Battery are fairly warm, but the motor is baking, even with a heat sink, and I mean you pull away with your finger the millisecond you touch it. I have a TA03f, p2k, 17 tooth pinion. The drive train is smooth as the you-know-what of a baby, and the gear mesh is fine (I did the reliable paper between gears trick). I have my RC in the freezer now (no, I'm not kidding).

Anyone have ideas? I think I need to bring the motor to get the Comm cut (whatever that means, I've never done it before).

Are you overgeared? Don't use the paper, i've found that it makes my MOTOR HOT! Hint Hint. See what other people gear there tao3f.

The mesh is fine. It's not over geared at all. I think stock, the car comes with a 14 tooth gear.

first off i dont think its a good idea to have ur car in the freezer second to cut ur comm is to have ur comm or commuicator trued by a truing lathe it cleans the grim and stuff so that ur brushes get the best contact with ur ur comm also make sure nothing is binding in ur tranny make sure to grease ur gears good and spinn everything to see if everything is spinning feely other than that i wouldnt know also like i said i wouldnt put a car in the freezer let it cool off on ur work shop table and put a fan by it to slightly hurry up the proccess cya be==>

With the summer coming along very well, some things are just going to get hot, so you should be conservative with the throttle and such, and the rest time in between batteries. Also, like the person above suggested, check for a binding Driveline.

Like I said, the drive train is as smooth as a baby's behind. I also need a new belt, and I don't take care of my motor, so I'm sure it's just the motor. I did burn my finger and it really hurts now! :( :)

My RC is fine after being in the freezer. ;)

Am I missing something here? You said the car came with a 14 tooth gear, & then you went to a 17 tooth gear & you think the motor was the problem? Thats a huge increase in gear ratio, & is probably why the motor is getting so hot. No way should a stock motor, when it's geared right, overhaet a speed control & batteries. Especialy a P2K.
You're overgeared.

You'd be surprised that it is not over geared. In the manual they say you can use a 20 tooth pinion with a STOCK 540 and bearings as a suitable ratio. I was running 21 teeth a while ago and the motor would get warm (p2k), but not hot. Now it's baking at 17 teeth. The ratio with 17t is 7:1, 20t is 5.96:1. Like I said, it's not over geared.

PS
I have bearings, the drive shaft is smooth as it can get.

If it ran cool at 21 teeth , why did you drop the ratio to 17 teeth? If the com is realy bad it could be the problem. Excessive arcing can cause similar problems.

or it could be the oposite under geared try it with your 21t again

Actually, a 7:1 final ratio isn't that bad for a P2K, but it IS possible that the motor itself is the problem. As you said, you haven't had the comm trued on it, so there's a chance that the slots between segments of the comm have gotten gummed up, & that will cause the motor to get VERY hot(& of course there will be a good deal of arcing). I'd suggest you have the comm trued & make sure it's still in useable condition before you use that motor again(defintely make sure those slots are cleared of any gunk)..... :)

Thanks!

The reason I dropped from 21 to 17 was because at 21 it was getting really hot. It used to be fine at 21, but that was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Or something. :D

Your local hobby shop should either be able to cut the com, or know someone who will. It's routine maintanance. You might also want to show up at a race. There are almost always guys there that'll do it for a few bucks on the spot.
