View Full Version : Is it okay for chargers to get really hot?

Have a Duratrax Piranha and a Mega 2 charger. Both these suckers get REALLY hot to touch(will almost give you a blister!) while they are charging batteries. Is this normal? Just in case, I purchased a small fan that I have blowing on them when they are charging...but it's one more thing to carry around :/

DEFIANTELY, some thing is wrong, or they are being overused, if they are constantly running, that will do it, jsut use the fan, i do, no burden, i have a rhino, but i use it to cool the power supply more than the rhino, it has one built in

Heat means wasted power. I'd say you have a short somewhere, or as said before.. you're over working it.

I have the DuraTrax charger and it gets warn and toasty but never hot. You got a problem with your chargers.
I got the piranha charger too. It gets hot as hell if I charge couple batteries with it without cooling it down. I just think it is normal, because some chargers came with the built-in fan cooling fan and the piranha doesn't. So I just do something as you did: putting a small fan next to it to cool it down while charging.
(Think about why some chargers have a built-in fan)

Dang, both these chargers are brand spanking new too! :/ The Mega 2 gets hot during the FIRST battery (charge or discharge), the Piranha heats up after 2 continuous charges. Guess I'll be packing this fan along! Maybe I could use some thermal paste and heatsinks to help with heat dissipation...or I could drill more holes(the vent holes on the Mega are on the bottom) but I'll check for a short somewhere first. Thanks for the replies.

I had a mega 2 once. It ran very warm when charging and ran extremely HOT discharging. I found that putting it up on it's side helped. Also a fan is a must. Nothing is wrong with the mega 2 (except it isn't a good charger).
Cheers,

I had a pirahna too, it was very efficient at warming up sandwiches while charging packs! http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif
