Another Gearing Question

I have installed my atomic Force 17x2 With a 17T Pinion on my Tamiya 4wd Buggy. The Motor runs Great and it gets mildly warm. My Question is when I use a 19T it get hot, not burning hot just hot. Is it better to just run the 17T? I am happy with the performance. I wanted to know that if getting a motor too hot kills it will running a motor slighty undergeared hurt it? Or will running it on the cool side make it last longer?

Iforgot, Really, I forgot to mention that the lower (smaller pinion) ratio will give longer run times. :D

Cooler is definately better for longevity, but may or may not be as good for performance. It depends on how much maintanance you want to do, & where you run your car ( grass=hot!). Undergearing a little won't hurt anything, but overgearing is a killer. Once you overheat a motor it needs maintanance to bring it back to good condition. You might pick up an 18 pinion & hit it just right, but I would stay on the safe side. Sounds like you found the motor that you were looking for. :cool:

This is wierd my motor actually runs cooler with a 21T vs 17T is this normal????

it happens sometimes. the 17t might be so undergeared that you are overrevving it. whatever gears you need to run to keep the motor cool, those are the right gears. the 19turn motor will accept a larger pinion than the other, so it could definitely be that the 21t pinion is better with the 19turn motor.

Noobie is right , if it is waaay undergeared it can make them run hot, it just depends. I am not familiar with your car. I just don't understand why it ran hotter with a 19 than a 17, & then cooler with a 21. Bottom line is run the highest gearing you can & still run fairly cool. Are you faster than your wife now? :rolleyes:
