Hello,

I got a Duratrax Intellipeak ICE charger and found out that I still need to get a DC power supply to run the thing. Radio Shack has a 15 A DC supply for another $80 + tx, that will bring the total to about $220 or so for my charging set up. The hobby store where I got the Maxx also suggested that I get a charger that can charge 2 packs at once and suggested I have a "quick" charger as well.

All of the reviews I read on the ICE say it is pretty good but one of the cons is that it can only discharge at a max rate of 10 amps.

Here are my questions:

Why and when are 10 amps not enough?
How much faster does a quick charger work than the ICE will?
Are there self-contained AC/DC chargers that will do what the ICE will AND do multiple packs for about the $220 I will end up spending? [For those that do not know, it will charge/discharge Nicad, NiMH, Lithiums, break in motors, store 10 battery types and much more other stuff. I dunno when/if I am ever going to need to break in a motor but it sounds cool]. I believe the most important things are to charge/discharge all three types of batteries, mutliple batteries at once and higher discharge rate.
If there are not, how much more will they cost?
Or should I keep the ICE?
If I keep it, it was suggested I get a DC PS from a 'puter. How tough would that be? I'm an Ex EE but worked on electronics that use mA and microamps. Higher power stuff is not really my expertise although, of course, I do remember the basics!

I read about an MRC Super Brain 977 and it can do multiple packs but has a lower discharge current.

Whew! That's a mouthful.

Thanks,
Jorge

yeah man the ice is not a wquick charger because it is apeak charger.. usually takes a lil bit longer to charge but it fully charges the battery... if u want a dual peak charger take the ice back and get one... bu it will nto do what the ice will... the ice is the top of the line charger made right now.

Unless you need to charge two packs at the same time, like for an E-maxx, the ICE is just fine. The ICE will charge up to 8 amps, so it is a quick charger. It can charge a Ni-Mh in about 30 mins at 2C.
A 10 amp discharge is fine for most people. I higher rate will require a larger charger to disapate the higher heat.

Ok thanks, it looks like I will stick with the ICE then. Is the RadioShack 15 amp DC supply a good one? Should I get the temp sensor for it as well?

Oh, do you know anything about the Integy INDI 16x8V6 AC/DC Charger? It seems to do everything and discharge at 30 amps [everything except the multiple charging thing which appears not to be needed].

Also, what do you think about this battery package? 4 - 3300 sticks for 60 bucks.

If you really need a discharge function, just build or buy a bulb discharger that can do 20 amps. (There's currently a thread in the RC Electronics section about this.) Don't give up on one of the best chargers in the world just because of the discharge function. Two channel peak chargers tend to have a lot of downsides and the two that I can currently think of (MRC 977 and the Duratrax Dual Peak) can't even compete with the ICE.

I can't be as sure about Radio Shack's 15 amp supply(having no personal experience with it), but I do have their 25 amps one(which is the same one as a 23 amp one sold by Competition Electronics, only it's about $30 cheaper at Radio Shack) & it works great, I've got it running just about everything at the track, up to 3 chargers at once & will also power a voltage regulator I bought to supply power to my comm lathe & to break in motors, runs nice & smooth, & doesn't even get warm in use. Very nice.....

Hi, I kept the ICE charger and got the RS supply. That little thing is VERY cool. I think I am going to enjoy using it.

So for my first charges I am "cycling" them one time discharge first and then a charge just using their normal program - is that correct?

I'm not all that clear on the display and what it is showing me but I guess I have to become familiar with it.

How long should new 3600 NiMH batteries take to cycle?

Thanks, glad I could help. I got some too and some AA's. Mine should arrive tomorrow since they ship from NoCal.
