Cavalieri, James and Pavidis Win Big At The Dirt Nitro Challenge
Last year nearly 15-inches of rain soaked The Dirt’s loamy BMX/Corona clay track the days leading up to the Nitro Challenge and the race was still held. This year the rain came during the event, but that didn’t stop the always calm and hard-working Joey Christenson from getting ‘er done! Joey, his Kubota tractor and crew worked tirelessly to prep the track after the rain drenched the epic layout. In the end, the track was dialed, traction was gnarly and the races were edge-of-your seat thrillers. In 1/10-scale, Team Associated/Orion’s Ryan Cavalieri took the top spot on the podium after driving a smart race with his RC10 FTGT. In its maiden voyage, the Kyosho Inferno 777 ST-R driven by Mark Pavidis took top honors in the Unlimited Monster Truck class. Unfortunately I didn’t see Pavidis’ pass on Thunder Tiger’s Ryan Maifield late in the race, but some pro drivers say it was controversial. In the Pro 1/8-scale main it was the “Jammin Show” with the host being Taylor James. James and his Team Jammin teammate Adam Drake captured everybody’s attention the latter minutes of the race. The two swapped spots a few times with the most dramatic pass coming from James. James’ buggy tucked inside the Drake’s buggy at the end of the straightaway just before a large double. His buggy took flight just inches from the inside pipe and landed on the inside of the proceeding turn. His tight line in the turn put him in the lead in what was one of the cleanest passes I have seen in a long time. James went onto win with The Drake taking second.
