View Full Version : How many turns are these motors??

I have three motors. One is called D2 the dirtinator(purple can), the second is called speed gems extreme, and the third one is Team Kinwald The dirtinator(silver can with red label). Am i able to just count the turns(wires) on the armature by eye or are there wires under other wires??? i can post pics later if it helps any. I was also wondering if i can put the armature of a newer motor into the D2 can and endbell, especially the endbell, the color of the can and endbell match perfectly on my Blackfoot.I apprieciated anyones help, im new at the motor thing.

the wires wrapped around the armature will be the number of windings that a motor is rated at.

well, some motors strictly come out as strictly 19t's or 27t's. Others (most) come in a variety of turns. If you do not know the exact number of turns when you buy or trade for it, then you are going to need to pop the can and count turns. Noone can really help ya there unfortunatly. Your speed jem is probally a 19t though.

Well i opened up the cans, the D2 seems to be a 11 or 12 turn, the speed gems seems to be 15 turns and the kinwald is a 21 as far as i can tell. The com. is really warn on 2 motors and the brushes are slightly chiped are they worth rebuilding??? will the venom brushes work (VEN-1420) and im not sure about the springs, should there be some give, because 2 motors also seem to be very stiff, the brushes dont bob in and out when you push on them.

If they worth using depends on how much com is left. If you have or know someone with a comm lathe they can cut the comm and get some more life out of them if there's enough there to cut. Otherwise your looking at a new armature and by then you just may as well buy a new motor since the ones you listed are pretty old styles except for the speed gem.

Chips in brushes are sure signs of needing replacements. I'd use the real trinity brushes if you can get them. The springs should be somewhat stiff. If in doubt just pull them off and make sure they aren't hung up with dirt or something. They aren't very expensive either so you could just buy new ones of those too if you want to be sure.

With mod motors there is sometimes a keyed index number on one of the armature stacks - some companies use their stock number to ID the turn and wind. Look on the armature stack and there may some identifing number like 12x1 which would be it's a 12 turn single, if the number is 2005 you would have to find Trinity stock number for the D2 to find what turn and wind it is. Counting the wires is not accurate, motor that use multi strands (winds) may first wind the small gauge wire first, then the large guage wire last.
Trinity made changes to the cans since the D4, there maybe a slight clearance problem when using newer armatures in can 3.0 or older.
