I did a search on soldering and found a thread about the Radio Shack Digital Soldering Station. It looks cool to me and I'm thinking about buying it. Does anyone have one? If so, how do you like it? Is it worth the $50 (seems like a good price)?

I would like to get some opinions before I order since the stores don't carry it and I can't actually look at it close up before I buy

thanks

Well, it looks as if it'll be hot enough, but I don't know if all the extra bulk will be worth it. I'd much rather get a nice 45 watt Weller iron and use my little solder iron stand from RS with it. I don't feel the need to adjust my iron temperature, so I'll stick with my setup. A few guys here can attest to the powerful setup I use. There's no other way for me...

I have the RS soldering station you mentioned. It works just fine. I just used it to solder up some Monster maxx motors for my E-Maxx.

About "extra bulk" I don't know what you mean by that. It tkaes up very little space on my workbench and It is not designed to be portable anyway.

I prefer my non-adjustable, very portable, and all around kick-***** 45 Watt Weller soldering iron...

Nairb,

I appreciate your reply, and you seem very knowledgeable on the subject of RC. I have noticed in reading your posts that you seem to believe that whatever product you have is absolutely THE BEST and there is no reason for ANYONE to have anything except for what you have.

I wouldn't be surprised if Weller and Multiplex are paying you huge money to spam up these boards with "Multiplex rules!" and "the Weller is all you need!" until we all go out and buy the stuff just because it's easier to agree with you.

Again, thanks for the reply but I jsut wanted opinions on the digital soldering station, not a sales pitch on the Weller.

BTW - wasn't it you who wrote the original post with the link to the digital soldering station? I could be wrong but I thought it was you http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

old phart, thanks for the reply!

No, I didn't write the original post about the RS iron.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, Big Wig. Yeah, I realize that I've probably been shouting about those two things a lot lately, and I'm sorry if it has been annoying. I don't want to be obnoxious, by any stretch. I guess I've been suggesting my semi-new iron and radio a lot because I truly think they are amazing products (compared to what I used to use) and they honestly are worth investigating. That doesn't mean they're the only thing worth investigating, I know. I don't mean to put it across that way. I am NOT one of those people who thinks "whatever product you have is absolutely THE BEST and there is no reason for ANYONE to have anything except for what you have." No way. There are plenty of good products to choose from in the industry, and I'm happy with my choices. I don't put down other people for choosing other products or their products. Don't accuse me of acting that way, because I don't. At least I try very hard not to.

I wish these companies were paying me for testimonials, but they're not. I just like to help people and try to do it most of the time, but I don't take every opportunity. I give my honest opinions and I tell it like it is; that's just what I expect from others. You wanted opinions on the digital soldering station, so I gave you mine. That is my honest opinion. Once again, it appears to be a quality iron that will be hot enough to do R/C soldering. I'm sure you'd be happy with its performance. Think about this, though. How often do you need to adjust your iron's temperature? I never feel or see the need to (note: that's my opinion). Also, it will be fine if you always leave it on your workbench at home, but if you take it to the track regularly, you might get sick of packing the iron, stand, and the black box, not to mention all the space it takes up. I would not like to (another one of those opinion things). That's just my side of it. You can disagree, I don't mind. I've stated my opinion; you can take it or leave it, but I think it's worth considering. That is all.

Nairb,

Thanks for responding. I better understand your comments now. And thanks for being so nice after my comments. I wasn't trying to rile you at all but you never know how people will react http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I appreciate your opinions!
