View Full Version : Prather or Octura?

I have used octura and prather on my deep vee electric,
and I get the best speed and ride height I want with a prather 215 on my brushless, and a 220 on my SS1.
It seems that on "my" boat the octura puts too much load, and locks the bow down.

I notice that the octura has a larger "leading edge" or rather more of a blade in that area.(more meat in front of the drive dog)

I know that octura has over a hundred different sizes, and prather has like 10, but does anyone have any thoughts into their different blade designs, and when you would want to use one over the other?

Thanks,
Daniel

i like octura best, i used to use a prather 215 on one of my hulls and it was good. octura just has more options. you could always try cutting off some of the leading edge too...it makes a big difference if you do it right and keep it balanced.

They're all good, just keep trying 'till you find the perfect prop. Don't overlook ABC either. Brand doesn't much matter.

I try to find the best prop for each boat, no matter what the brand is. I go through a lot of props to find the right one, on some boats I've tried 6 or more.

The closest Octura design to the 200-series Prathers is the "X"-Series; both are non-lifting, general purpose propellers. The Prathers have a greater pitch for the same diameter as the X400 Octuras, so they will load the motor more. The tongue (the part ahead of the drive dog) increases the load on the motor but contributes little to the performance of the prop on FE boats. Octura started removing much of the tongue on its "M" series props after a lot of FE boaters started cutting it off their "X400" props.

Ths closest Octura prop to your Prather 215 is the X640, but for the BL system you might try the M440. That prop has the tongue cut off for less load and more rpm. The pitch is less than the Prather, but it is worth a try.

I find the x645 and y547 to be the best on my SS1-powered Limited Sport Hydro, the SS1 motor likes a good load. On a mono a smaller prop like an x642 or m445 might be a better choice.
