hey all. i'm trying to get my fiance into this great hobby, but i'm stumped. I've been into rc myself for many years, and i'm trying to share the passion that I have with my soon to be wife. I myself started with an Traxxas Rustler, but on what to get her as her first rc car is beyond me. Any ideas? I want to start off with something simple, an rtr, like an rusty or pede. As far as mods go, i'll hold off on anything extreme like brushless motors, the only think i'll be doing is getting her custom painted bodies of her baseball teams, the oakland A's and sac rivercats.

sorry for the longpost and thanks for the help.

lol, thats not a long post lol.

to your problem/query- i think youre on the right track with something like a rustler or a pede. keep it simple and you'll both have a blast

my firsty was a rusty too man, its my favorite of anything i'v ever owned, close 2nd from the t-maxx. But really I dont know how someone would actually not like this hobby. It is truly amazing when all your cars are running perfect, then something breaks and you wanna break it into a million pieces!

The Rusty could take whatever I threw at it, I only wish I could find that and the T3 (both were stolen out of storage). The only rc car I have now is the wally world crawler, 1:18, that i'm thinking about selling.

Welcome aboard norcal, but take a note from an old fart - if she's not into it already, she most likely never will be. You'll then just have an extra RC (which is not all that bad if you think about it . . .)

When I got my first GT, I opened up the box, my wife was checking it out, and the first words out of her mouth were "Can I have one?" If you don't get that kind of reaction from her when you take her trackside or out bashing, she's probably just acting excited because she knows you want her to be.

Believe me in the long run you are going to be much better off **listening** and finding something that SHE does that YOU may be interested in getting into. Have fun with your first ballet lesson! :D (Just kidding lol)

But if you must - the K.I.S.S. rule always applies, any electric 2WD truck RTR would work best, among those mentioned already is the T4 or XXX. I say trucks because you're not limited to pavement.

Now that I think about it, you may get her into it on the "cute" factor with an 18T or a mini-T!

I may try the cute factor with the 18t or mini t rocknbil, I have a wally world nylint crawler, and she drove it the other day, and now she wants one, but I was thinking of getting her something that she could fix if it broke.

At first my wife thought it was stupid, all this r/c toy stuff. But she was happy cuz it made me happy, and she would always watch, and take pics of me jumpimg my Pede(1st r/c), that way she could learn to use her new digital camera I just bought and she liked to see me enjoying herself.

One day I asked her if she wanted to try it and she not really. So I was like look, at least give a couple pulls of the trigger and if you dont like it, i wont ask again.

Well 4 batts later she was, doing some wheelies in the driveway, took of to the yard and hit the cinder block I was using to hold up my "ramp" at full speed. Smashed the bumper to pieces and messed up a few other things, at which point she was soooo upset, till she realized I was laughing my butt off cuz I thought it was cool.

Now here we are a year later, and she has 3 Pedes, 2 Rustys, a Bandit, and an s-maxx, not to mention all the r/c's I have. Just give her time and alwasy try and include her in what you are doing.

Beyond the cute factor of the 18th scales is also the indoor factor. I had my 18T running in the living room and was playing around letting my daughter drive. After a while my wife asked for a turn at the wheel. She hit a few things, but managed not to break anything. I didn't force it on her though, which I think was key.

Like most others, my wife has almost zero interest in RC. She has a Rustler with monster truck tires on it that she'll use during the summer if I do all the work to get it ready. She'll drive it, but that is literally it. She did try oval racing once, but it wasn't her thing and she will almost always go with me to watch me fly. She used to go to a lot of weekly races with me, but I think watching me crash airplanes is much more entertaining and takes far less time than a whole day of racing.

My advice for what it's worth is to hook her up with something that doesn't cost too much and is something you like at least a little bit, so it's not a complete waste should she have no real interest in it.

Thanks for the advice all, I'm gonna go with a 1:18th scale truck, she thought the mini-t I had was cute, and she enjoyed driving it, sometimes not wanting to give the radio back.

The mini would be a great way to go. My wife really likes the mini's, she loved driving my RC18T.

Whats weird was she liked the mini's and my bigger LST, but never the 1/10 scale stuff. Never quite understood that.

Since we have a young child, having her race too right now isn't in the plans but when our daughter is older, may get her more involved in racing.

I at least have plans for the kids, they all have RCs in some form. though my youngest seems to only like running the vehicle upside down and watching the wheels turn. Good thing its not a hobby level vehicle with a hot motor!

A couple months ago when I started to browse and research about getting back into this hobby, my girlfriend thought it was silly. But after I got my TL01 and then my RC18T with the Mamba, she seems more interested in the hobby than before. She wants a Micro RS4 with a Murcielago body now. The only factor she still thinks is silly, are the price of parts and kits. I showed her some of the $500+ trucks out there and she scoffed bigtime. "Pffff!!!"

It's all a matter of giving something new a chance.

If she into micros, may be a better buy to get an Xray M18 or a BRP SC18 (any version) .

From my exeperience the Micro RS4 just didn't handle that good in stock form. the BRP I was running against them (non V2 version) with full size AA battery packs and big electronics would put 5 laps easily on the micro RS4. I even purchased a used micro RS4 with some hop ups to see if I could tune it better and still couldn't get it to handle like my BRP.

with the X-Ray you get X-Ray quality and it does handle well.

...just remember guys, r/c's may end up to be more expensive gifts than jewelry you know. :D I remember one year my bf at the time got me an O.S. RG engine for Valentine's Day and I was stoked!!!

True story: a guy I had been dating let me run his 1/10th scale (HPI Rush). It was beat up pretty bad, but I liked it, and then when he took me to an off-road track, that was where I had fun! It's a lot cooler trying to run a track and hit some wicked jumps than just drive around the yard! Anyway, I started running the Rush, once I started winning some races, I "inherited" his old 1/8th scale GS Storm. Once I got proficient at that, and ran a few races, I got the best Christmas gift ever (to date)! A GS Storm Pro Kit. I put it together from the ground up, actually had a lot of fun doing it too (in all fairness though, I was an engineering major in college, and have a relatively technical mind).

I haven't run in a while, but plan to get back into it this coming spring.

Anyways, let the girls bash on a track, if they start developing a skill, they're going to want to continue. If they don't have a skill for it, they'll just be frustrated, but might have more of a respect for what you do for fun.

P.S. At my old track in Florida, there were a couple of little girls, must have been around 10-12 years old, and they were really good!

Good luck!

'Becca

P.S. Hi 'bil! How it's going?

Oh my!!! :D Quite awesome! I've always wanted to try a heli! I know 4DMNYC had picked one up last year - I still haven't gotten over there to crash it on him! I'll have to bookmark the site and read more later, and I'm sneaking on here from work right now :o shhhhhhhh.

Dude I had a hard time convincing her that I won 2 Mini T Pro's at the track... one is still for sale

Well you just can't win over some people I guess. How much is the Mini-T Pro you're selling?
