A while ago, my dad gave me Dumas Scarab 38 and last night I finally went out to his house to pick it up. The instructions are horrible. Anyone have any experience with these? How difficult is the build?

Yes I believe it is. It's all figerglass and he gave me a weedwhacker engine to go in it. They have a couple on the website but I think this one is it.

They're not to hard to build but I would convert it to surface drive. That will simplify things alot as you will only have to drill a 3/8" hole in the transon as opposed to cutting a monster hole in the keel, that and it would add quite abit of speed when setup properly. I would also invest in a plastic radio box as the one in the kit is very tight to fit radio gear in not to mention wood is harder to waterproof. I just happen to be working on one for a friend right now and will post some pics if you would like. I converted his from nitro and sub surface drive to a homelite and a surface drive although I did leave the wooden radio box.

apache,
I'd love to see some pics if you don't mind. I'm not really a boat person so I am trying to decide if I want to keep or sell it based on how much time is required to get it running.

Sure, I'll do my best to get them posted just bear with me as I am not the most technologicaly advanced person so I may have to just PM them to you or get someone to walk me through posting pics. The setup is very simplistic, easy to build, and easy to service.

Posting pics is easy. click on the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the page which will bring up the the advanced reply box. Enter in your text as you normally would. Then scroll down to the "Advanced Options" area and click the "Manage Attachments" button. That will bring up a dialog box that will let you attach a picture. It has to be fairly small, smaller that 640 x480 if I recall correctly. Unfortunately, I believe you can only do one picture per post. Hope this helps!

I am thinking of building a Scarab. Is the hull big enough to allow a 25cc water cooled engine to be cowled up, or would it be exposed like the air cooled motor in teamchromes pic?

Hi all,
First I found out that running a surface drive the boat at speed in turns would roll. So to minimize this I removed some of the strakes.
Boy !...what a differance. Big and fast..Turns right and left no problems.
By the way not much boat in the water in the straights.
The other one will be pretty much the same but with a pro mod G260.
As soon as I can.... I'll try to get some video to post .

bad boy, nice boats...gives me some insperation to want mine done!! ? for you tho, on the more scale boat (with blue graphics) I notice the mounting hole in the transom looks mighty similar to the one in my transom??? What drive do you have on that boat? And if it's an amps outdrive are you going to reuse it?? Let me know.....I'd even just like a picture of your outdrive just for comparison sake.

I didn't get any outdrive with it. I'm planning on useing the same type of setup.
Where I run my boats my Lazer 45 is to fast for conditions which is also for sale LOL.
I love to see my boats air out as they fly over the water.
I'll check and see if any people that I know may have one or two. If so I'll be sure to let you know.
Good luck with your project.

Bad boy2085: How did you remove the strakes on your boat? I converted my scarab to surface drive also but as yet have not been able to run it. Would like to know as i probably will have the same problem and will have to remove part of mine. I presume you mean 14'" & 16" from transom.

Yes thats right .I removed mine with an right angle grinder and a piece of wood with sand papper attached. Use extreme caution... Just get it close with the grinder and then block sand. Also you may need to lay more cloth on the inside to reinforce where the strakes were. As I did not do to the white boat...It came out just fine..I will prime and paint as soon as I stop running it...LOL
On my other boat I found that I have a hollow spot that I will have to put more cloth in. If you look closely you can see it. Left side
Good luck
